Official 3-4 Defense Thread

"The Panthers may look for their next coordinator to run a 3-4 scheme. That's coach John Fox's background and would give them a better chance to retain Julius Peppers."

Are we really looking at a 3-4 defense? I feel like we have a smaller defense and we would not fit well in a 3-4. Our D would look something like:

DE:

DT: Kemo

DE:

OLB: Davis

ILB: Beson

ILB:

OLB: Peppers

CB: Gamble

SS: Harris

FS: Godrey

CB: Lucas/Marshall

We would need to fill both end postions and I do not know how well Beason and Davis will fair in this system. Also Peppers would be a huge question mark on the outside. I think Kemo would thrive in this defense and would take up two blockers. Johnson is too small and Brayton did fair well with the Raiders when they played in a 3-4. For this to work we would need to get Peppers to agree to come back and fill three spots on the defense. I do not think it would be worth and we should just stay with th 4-3. What I am really trying to get out of this post is how do you think Beason, Davis, and Peppers would fair in the D.

this wasn't your first post? Ah, I see, 34 posts or so. You must have been hanging out in the Lovely Ladies section. I do agree, i'ts a nice place. Hoewver, you must have your head stuck in the sand to post this thread.

We have played around with the 3-4 this year and last. We might see a hybrid or the 3-4 in the mix more often this season. I still think our base will be the 4-3 as you have said.

Actually we didn't do any 3-4 this year. Rushing 3 guys was not a 3-4. It was 3 linemen, 3 backers, and 3 corners and 2 safeties like a nickel package. I can't remember a time we had 4 linebackers in the game at the same time. Most 3-4s who go to 4 or linemen against the run just bring the outside linebackers up to the line and put them gapped wide outside the TEs. Arizona did that to us as well in our games. Tweeners like Hilee Taylor or even Peppers could play a 3-4 or 4-3 concept if they have the cover skills.

hasent greenbay changed to a 3-4 for next year

I have no idea. But regardless, that's next year. Last year they were on top of their game as a 4-3. Proving to that fella earlier that there are a lot of good 4-3 defenses other than a few 3-4 defenses like the Steelers, Ravens, and Chargers.
