Official 3-4 Defense Thread

Kemo did not play a one gap scheme for us this year nor do any of the 3-4 defenses. Kemo played a 2 gap technique lining up over the center. Lewis, Peppers and Brayton all played a 1 gap style. The defense was skewed to get pressure from Pepper's side and avoid double teams to Lewis and Peppers.

For what is worth nose tackles in the 3-4 usually play over the center in a 2 gap technique meaning they go right or left depending on where the ball goes much like kemo did for us. Most of the time the other 2 linemen play over the tackles and do the same thing.

4-3 configurations can use a 1 gap or 2 gap alignment based on philosophy but 3-4s out of necessity use 2 gap schemes since they are trying to occupy 5 offensive linemen with 3 defenders.

Most teams that run a 3-4 mix in 4-3 concepts particularly against good running teams. It really isn't whether you go 3-4 or 4-3 so much as what you do within that scheme. As noted above there are teams like Philly who run a 4-3 and are very aggressive and difficult to defend. 3-4 defense can be difficult to defend because it makes blocking assignments more difficult to pick up for the offense. Given Fox's priority to defend therun I expect we will keep a 4-3 scheme. Still it can be very aggressive. I surely wouldn't run a scheme I didn't wholeheartedly believe in because a star player doesn't want to play in my choice. I would run what I thought was best but would want one that is more difficult to the opposition to figure out and easier to run.

We have played around with the 3-4 this year and last. We might see a hybrid or the 3-4 in the mix more often this season. I still think our base will be the 4-3 as you have said.

3-4 teams run a base 1 gap also using the LB as the 4th 1 gap guy. Just like the 4-3 though they never run it all the time nor do they run 2 gap all the time.
