Official 3-4 Defense Thread

My question to you is, "Why a 3-4?"

the reason everyone wants a 3-4 is becuse if you think abt all the dominate and high quality defenses, they basically all run it...ravens, steelers...and other defenses that are pretty consistently good yr in and yr out like the chargers, pats, cowboys..these teams always seem to be around in the postseason too (usually)

the only teams with great defenses on a consistant basis that run the 4-3 are the eagles and bucs...

i dont know if i really think we have the personel or if we could quickly adapt to the 3-4 but it cant get much worse than the last half of our season on defense so why not try it

Giants, Titans, Vikings, Bucs, Bears, Eagles, Jaguars, and Green bay have been fairly consistent if not really excellent defenses, even if the Jags have fallen off this one year.

You see the Steelers and Ravens and say, "we should do what they do!"... I would have to say the attitude on the field has more to do with the Steelers and Ravens then it being all because they run a 3-4...

Each is a style. Neither are a rule of thumb. Being a 3-4 or 4-3 doens't determine your talent or work ethic.

"The Panthers may look for their next coordinator to run a 3-4 scheme. That's coach John Fox's background and would give them a better chance to retain Julius Peppers."

Are we really looking at a 3-4 defense? I feel like we have a smaller defense and we would not fit well in a 3-4. Our D would look something like:

DE:

DT: Kemo

DE:

OLB: Davis

ILB: Beson

ILB:

OLB: Peppers

CB: Gamble

SS: Harris

FS: Godrey

CB: Lucas/Marshall

We would need to fill both end postions and I do not know how well Beason and Davis will fair in this system. Also Peppers would be a huge question mark on the outside. I think Kemo would thrive in this defense and would take up two blockers. Johnson is too small and Brayton did fair well with the Raiders when they played in a 3-4. For this to work we would need to get Peppers to agree to come back and fill three spots on the defense. I do not think it would be worth and we should just stay with th 4-3. What I am really trying to get out of this post is how do you think Beason, Davis, and Peppers would fair in the D.

Our front 4 doesn't get pressure, and thats a big problem.

With the 3-4 you are blitzing every single play, and from different angles and a different position.

It pretty much changes the previous scheme that Trgo/Fox used and makes it better.

I think maybe a mixing in some 3-4 would not be a bad idea i mean Trgo early on did it with success but a base 3-4 would really show some growing pains next year and we really dont need that.

the 3-4.

I actually prefer this formation over a 4-3, but I honestly think Fox would suck at running one.

So as long as he's HC let's stay with a 4-3 and start being aggressive. That's all the medicine we require for defense.

Fox started at Blitzberg so I would say he could run one quite well. When he came to Carolina though we had the perfect set up to run the Cover 2 zone and thats why we did. Our personal dictates a diffrent approach this years so who knows what we run. I know we have been drafting 3-4 guys like crazy the past two year though.

Kemoeatu didn't start consistently until Nolan left and Ryan went back to an even-front 4-3 like us. He's big, but that doesn't mean he'd be great at taking on the center and he's kinda inconsistent (mostly due to leverage, because of his height). You can get away with that better in a one-gap defense, and that's what we do. You could go to a one-gap 3-4, but those are soul-less, awful creatures I'd rather not get in bed with.

 the one gap 3-4 is not all bad it is just not a read and react formation. Like it or not most 3-4 teams use it.

Most teams that run a 3-4 mix in 4-3 concepts particularly against good running teams. It really isn't whether you go 3-4 or 4-3 so much as what you do within that scheme. As noted above there are teams like Philly who run a 4-3 and are very aggressive and difficult to defend. 3-4 defense can be difficult to defend because it makes blocking assignments more difficult to pick up for the offense. Given Fox's priority to defend therun I expect we will keep a 4-3 scheme. Still it can be very aggressive. I surely wouldn't run a scheme I didn't wholeheartedly believe in because a star player doesn't want to play in my choice. I would run what I thought was best but would want one that is more difficult to the opposition to figure out and easier to run.
