Official 3-4 Defense Thread

Our front 4 doesn't get pressure, and thats a big problem.

With the 3-4 you are blitzing every single play, and from different angles and a different position.

It pretty much changes the previous scheme that Trgo/Fox used and makes it better.

that's WAY too simple of a way to put it, every scheme has it's draw backs

if we can't get pressure with our current players, i think it would be easier to change the players on the defensive line rather than change the whole entire defensive philosophy

we can get pressure with our current defense, we just need the right personel, and that is something the FO can accomplish through the draft and FA this year

to switch to a 3-4 right now would not make any sense

I answered the OPs question adequately.

bend but don't break is a shitty scheme, and it needs to be changed.

To get a completely revamped defensive line would require numerous draft picks and cap space the team doesn't have.

I just think it is foolish to think an organization would switch to a scheme to satisfy one player...Peppers has no business in a 3-4...whether he realizes it or not. Beason is an instinctive player, but he is not a fast player like Lamar Woodley or a James Harrison, and neither is Dan Connor, he is more suited for a 4-3 than any other linebacker we have and to suggest he play the 3-4 is just madness.

The 3-4 requires speedy linebackers that can take advantage of a defensive line that occupies offensive linemen effectively. The only player we have that fits this scheme perfectly is Thomas Davis, and he's come on strongly for us in the 4-3, I see no need to retard his development. The 3-4 also requires you have a free safety that can effectively make pre-snap reads. It requires a rangy safety that can roam the field and read the QB effectively, and Godfrey simply doesn't have that ability yet.

Chris Harris I must admit would fit just fine in such a defense, but the point is, to switch to a 3-4, we'd have to get rid of a ton of players just to put the right pieces in place, because right now, they simply aren't in place. We are in a window that allows us the chance to make a good playoff run again next year, we should not reinvent our defensive wheel at with this window rapidly closing for players like Steve Smith and Jordan Gross.

Uhm... ?

At least you didn't say, to bring back Peppers.

but your reasoning is because we don't get pressure. So instead of acquiring 1 or 2 DE's to help this. OR, a DT to clog the middle/rush the passer. You would rather revamp the entire defense just so we can have a DECENT 3-4?

Doesn't make sense.

Now, if you said, "because I like the 3-4 better and I find it more exciting." I would understand. It would have to do more with your preference than logic.

Because logically, under Fox and with our current setup, switching to a 3-4 is NOT logical.

Fire Fox, rebuild the entire team, then sure, it makes more sense...

A) when did the 4-3 become only a bend but dont break scheme?

B) we would have to find 2 DEs for a 3-4, plus we have to hope all the lbs could make the transition smoothly. thats not a forgone conclusion: vilma went from incredible 4-3 mlb to a waste in the 3-4 role. davis would likely be fine. as would beason. that still leaves the other MLB spot to an unproven connor, and a OLB spot.

I never said that, I said a completely new scheme would be welcome.

I also never said I think we should switch to a 3-4 or that we will switch to a 3-4, I said with the available new DC position switching to a 3-4 becomes more of a possibility.

Because logically, under Fox and with our current setup, switching to a 3-4 is NOT logical.

I'm assuming you read my first post, the initial post of the thread. Which said this:

Depending on who our DC will be, a 3-4 is now an actual possibility I think.

Imagine picking up Suggs and Ray Lewis. Having him and Beason in the middle, it would be sick.

I think Brayton can play DE in the 3-4 well, I think he did it in Oakland. Charles Johnson would be a (?) though I imagine he would be a good pass rusher.

Its fun to dream.

I must have deleted the sentence in which I said: "I know it would take a lot of players" when I edited it.
