Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

The Carolina Panthers have been one of the NFL's most consistent franchises under the steady hand of Marty Hurney as general manager. Since he assumed responsibilities in 2002, Carolina's 76 victories rank as the seventh most in the NFL, and the Panthers are one of only four teams not to have a season with double-digit losses. During that time, the Panthers have made three playoff appearances, won one NFC Championship, claimed two NFC South titles, been to two NFC Championship games and played in one Super Bowl.

It is quite a difference from the 1-15 team, which lost 15 consecutive games, that Hurney inherited after the 2001 season. With that resume, it is no surprise that Forbes.com recognized Hurney among the top 10 executives in professional sports in 2007. A year earlier, FoxSports.com had given him the same honor. Most recently, a poll by The Sporting News ranked Hurney third among the NFL's general managers for first round value in the draft behind only the Baltimore Ravens' Ozzie Newsome and the Indianapolis Colts' Bill Polian.

How many GMs have given away two 1st, two 2nds and a 4th for a 19th, 43rd and 89th pick?

(See, it's easy to play this game.)

None. now answer my question. :)

because, just like last year, teams aren't having to light it up against us, and they can sit on a ten point lead and not have to force it downfield

don't just sit and assume the defense would still be ranked that if our offense actually had its head anywhere but stuck up its own ass

That's right, I forgot that in your world, NFL offenses stop trying to score when they have the lead.

Do you seriously think our defense sucks?

Man, you write just like a pro!

Kevin Colbert

Tom Heckert(was with the eagles now with the browns)/Andy Reid

AJ Smith..

You maybe even have a case for Jerry Jones he can find the talent he just needs to stay away from the coaches.lol

I don't think Colbert is anything special, and Mr. Scot has already poked holes in that one.

Heckert's done a pretty good job managing the cap, but personnel decisions in Philly belong to Reid.

AJ Smith let Drew Brees walk without compensation. He also lost Michael Turner, again without compensation. As far as drafting, it's funny that you bring him into the picture, as he's got a bigger reputation than Hurney for gambling with picks and trading up for questionable value. Just look at this year's first rounder for a recent example. In his last five drafts, he's gotten something like four starters in the first three rounds.

As far as Jerry Jones, I just have to assume you've been drinking and lost your head. The only time he's won is when he used JJ's personnel, and when he let Parcells make the football decisions. He's good at oil. At GM, not so much. :)

You said GMs that draft better..I never said there were good at anything else. AJ Smith can draft he just sucks at other things.

Colbert used a 2nd round pick on Limas Sweed in 2008 and a 3rd rounder on TE Matt Spaeth in 2007. Also ended up having to dump firmer 1st rounder Santonio Holmes due to repeated character issues.

The first pick made in 2001 when Heckert became director of player personnel was Freddie Mitchell, chosen over Reggie Wayne and Chad Johnson. In 2006, he used a 5th rounder on skier Jeremy Bloom.

A J Smith is the guy who dumped Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season because of ego conflicts and replaced him with Norv Turner. He also could have gotten something decent for Vincent Jackson from a couple of teams but made demands others GMs considered "outrageous".

Every GM has their iffy moments.

The question was about GMs from just a drafting standpoint and Santonio Holmes was let go because of Character issues so it was a good pick.IMO

AJ Smith had two phenomenal years, 2004 and 2005. But since then, he's been really iffy.

In 2006, he got Cromartie and Marcus McNeil, which wasn't bad. Hurney got Williams, Marshall, Anderson, and King (I'm naming starters here)

In 2007, Smith took Eric Weddle (after trading a ton away for him). That's all they have to show from that draft outside of a bust first round WR pick. Hurney took Beason, Kalil, and Charles Johnson in that draft.

In 2008, Smith traded up again and got Antoine Cason (who finally cracked the lineup this year), and part-time starting FB Jacob Hester. Hurney took Stewart, Otah, Godfrey, Connor, Hayden, and Schwartz.

In 2009, it's Larry English and Louis Vasquez. Hurney's take was Martin and Fiametta (with Munnerlyn as an honorable mention, because he's the staring nickel)

And in 2010, Smith got his running back by trading away picks to move up for Ryan Matthews. A lot of people questioned the trade, because they don't think Matthews was worth what was given up and he probably would have been available when they selected. Hurney got Clausen, LaFell and Gettis.

So really, this guy might be stuck in your mind because of a couple of great years bought with the number one overall pick. But on balance, I think he's pretty ordinary, and so does the San Diego fan base.
