Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

That's why I threw in the fact that we're 11th. And we got rid of our two starters at DT for the past several years and lost our best defensive player, who was on the line. Yet, we're 11th overall despite a lopsided time of possession, and great against the pass. We were great against the pass with similar personnel in the secondary last year too.

Why is it so hard for you to admit that we have talent on the defensive side of the ball?

because, just like last year, teams aren't having to light it up against us, and they can sit on a ten point lead and not have to force it downfield

don't just sit and assume the defense would still be ranked that if our offense actually had its head anywhere but stuck up its own ass

Mr. Scot, I never ever base anything I post on anything these reporters say. When did you start?

"I think" & "IMO" mean something different to you than they do to me?

They have a level of access to the team that we don't. That alone makes them worth listening to.

I don't agree with everything they write, but I acknowledge they have way more inside info than I do.

Hurney has done very well picking out talent when he turns in the card.

The problem is he has a really bad habit of trading higher future picks for lower current ones. That and he's poor at manipulating the draft board (knowing when to trade up and down). He also has a complete inability to stockpile picks by trading aging players at the end of their contracts ala Patriots.

These factors put him in a situation where every single pick has to be a home run and it's just not realistic to think you can pull that off consistently.

Then he misvalues certain positions, basically building the offense backwards. Using huge amounts of draft value on the RB position (the deepest and easiest position to find) and has almost completely ignored QB until Clausen fell in his lap in the middle of the 2nd round.

Overall he's a good GM, but being good won't win you any championships. I'd like to find a guy that can be great.

Honestly, I think the Otah & Brown moves were due to trying to "win now." Clausen represented a distinct move in the opposite direction.

I do agree that he needs to stop mortgaging future picks for potential gain today though. Needs can change drastically between seasons and being unable to pick in the first round can be a really big handicap. Or the second round. =(

the Edwards one was ... well, honestly, I have no idea what happened there.

Just curious....

What GM out there has done a better job drafting over the past five years than Hurney? I'm making it easy on you guys, because most of them haven't been good enough to hang on longer than that.

Kevin Colbert

Tom Heckert(was with the eagles now with the browns)/Andy Reid

AJ Smith..

You maybe even have a case for Jerry Jones he can find the talent he just needs to stay away from the coaches.lol

Colbert used a 2nd round pick on Limas Sweed in 2008 and a 3rd rounder on TE Matt Spaeth in 2007. Also ended up having to dump firmer 1st rounder Santonio Holmes due to repeated character issues.

The first pick made in 2001 when Heckert became director of player personnel was Freddie Mitchell, chosen over Reggie Wayne and Chad Johnson. In 2006, he used a 5th rounder on skier Jeremy Bloom.

A J Smith is the guy who dumped Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 season because of ego conflicts and replaced him with Norv Turner. He also could have gotten something decent for Vincent Jackson from a couple of teams but made demands others GMs considered "outrageous".

Every GM has their iffy moments.

GMs take the credit - or the heat - for draft results, but college scouting departments are arguably more important.

Hurney's draft records got a lot better after 2005 when the team replaced College Scouting Chief Tony Softli with Don Gregory.

How much control GMs have over the scouting department varies from team to team.

1. Overall, the good with Hurney outweighs the bad. Everyone is transfixed by the horrors of Everette Brown and Jake Delhomme, but I doubt we'll ever know the full story behind that. For all we know, there might be a reason Fox was kept out of drafting after the 2009 season. Hurney is also fantastic with contracts, something that can't be overlooked.

2. Most importantly, it sends a terrible message to any potential replacement. Here's a guy that just did what the owner instructed him to do, and on top of that has been paraded out in front of the media every week to be pilloried. The guy has no more swords to fall on, yet has become the defacto face of the franchise in lieu of the owner.

To fire him after all he's done (sacrificing his public and professional reputation for Jerry's vendetta) would basically tell every other potential GM that the owner will flush you down the drain the second it's convenient.

We're already going to have enough trouble finding a coach after the way Richardson has handcuffed Fox. Let's not make it a GM as well.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOOLL?

He just signed an extension, one that was given to him AFTER the draft. If Jerry fires him it would be WITHOUT cause and have to pay the full salary , and he can't use the draft as an excuse for poor work performance because of why children? YES, because he offered the contract to him AFTER the draft.

there is not a 99% chance Hurney stays, it's an 100% chance. Enshrine this post I'm making somewhere and hold me to it.
