Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

If the team was going to be able to follow a Steeleresque pattern of reloading and pre-emptive drafting, they had to start somewhere. More than one team has started a long, successful run with an awful year.

Hurney learned from a guy that was pretty good at the GM game.

No one will do that because it will involve A. effort and B. writing something that can be factually refuted

And the last time I checked, Brees was coming off surgery and had been released by the Chargers. Why on earth would he even consider coming to Carolina, when there was no guarantee to start? Brees chose New Orleans over Miami, Carolina wasn't even in the running. And yes, he could have taken Flacco (who was largely considered a reach) over Stewart, and said goodbye to our 12-4 season that year. Hell, it's not like Flacco has even proven to be a Franchise guy yet, but hindsight ROCKS!

If Mr. Hurney could trade up and get E Brown, for what reason, no one can fathom, for a franchise QB, or a chance at one, he could have moved up a few positions for Ben, and the Panthers could have done the same with Flacco, let's see a possible franchise QB or J. Stewart. I know what most football people with a QB with a dead arm would have done. Running backs are a dime a dozen.

With Brees, there was no reason not to take a chance, or do research to see if a chance is warranted, but, that's ok, our main rival in the South has him now. They took a RB with a history of foot injuries in Stewart.

The Panthers team doctors believed that Brees was damaged goods. Remember, he'd just blown out his shoulder in the season finale and needed rotator cuff surgery.

The Dolphins even consulted the Panthers doctors on that one.

It's also, coincidentally, the reason the Panthers have to play Brees twice a year instead of once every four.

Finally, if you would have taken Brees with what he'd done at that point in his career over what Jake Delhomme had just done in 2005 you're dumb as hell.

Right, we trade up from 28th to 11th in the draft following a year where our new quarterback leads us to the super bowl so we can draft a quarterback. Makes sense to you, not to me.

And in the year where our quarterback makes the pro bowl, we go out and convince an injured third year quarterback who's had one good year in his career to sign with us, with the full intent to start him instead of our guy. Who just made the pro bowl. Makes sense to you, not to me.

And yes, reach further than the Ravens did for Flacco, when your QB is coming back off IR and you just saw a rookie go 2-1 for you. Jake went 12-4 that year, BTW. But if they had done that, I'm sure that everyone would have been behind the trade and no one would have called it wasted at all. Makes sense to you, not to me.

Well, I'll say this.

Hurney is a good gm. Yea he may have reached for Brown, but with the Peppers situation looking incredibly unsteady, who wouldn't? Plus Brown should be a perfect fit for Meeks defense.

The Armanti pick is still up in the air. Honestly had we given up anything less than a second I don't think people would be that mad.

Bright side: The lions and rams were too damn stingy to give up an early second round pick in this years draft when we wanted to move up for Clausen. Thank god because without our first rounder this year I would be legitimately depressed.

One thing that does concern me with Hurney, is up to date he has never drafted a major quarterback outside Clausen....there may come a day....say in April when we have to make this decision. God help us he is better at evaluating qbs than wide-outs

Really easy to look back on drafts and see who was missed and skipped over.

Just keep in mind that everyone else passed on Tom Brady too.

The same guys that got Tom Brady in the sixth also traded up to take Laurence Maroney over DeAngelo Williams in the first.

Second round the same year they took Chad Jackson over Greg Jennings.
