Hurney shouldn't be fired for two main reasons

a lot of the problem is debating GMs is harder than HCs because it's easier to know who the coordinators and assistants are that show the most competency to be considered as a candidate. GMs a lot of people don't even know where you start to look for replacement

what of this thread? because both of those moves predate hurney as gm

I know of the timeline however I was trying to make a point that it is not the GM in many cases who do the ground work information about a player or person. This is relevant to this thread in my opinion because I feel that so often the GM or head coach gets axed based on a system not being in place to successfully find and assess talent in all levels of football. To consistently have high quality talent in the system there must be talented scouting staff and evaluators in place. Hurney has actually made decent additions as opposed to previous regimes.

Thanks for your response. I enjoy the conversation.

Hurts who? Not the Panthers, because the way this worked out the total hit came in a non-cap year. Maybe it hurts JR a little (like when you lose a $10 bill), but he probably signed off on it.

Didn't hurt the Panthers a bit, but it sure helped them get Hollis Thomas.

What would that have done to our 2008 year? 12-4 still? And who would have traded for him after a 2.5 sack year anyway? What sort of offers did we get?

After 2008 we tried to sign him again, and we ended up franchising him. If you recall, he refused to sign his tender until the last possible minute, which prevented us from pursuing a sign-and-trade. And in 2010 the price tag was just too damn high.

Seriously, how do you expect ANYONE to fix that situation? Peppers did everything he could to screw over the Panthers, and in the end JR didn't want to pay for it. And had we franchised him again, which was our only option he left us, I am sure you would be bitching about the price tag...

Obviously the logical move after Peppers failed to sign an extension in 2007 would have been to let him walk.

Julius Peppers last year of his contract pre FT was 14 million plus change. With a minimum mandatory 20% increase this is how the Panthers ended up paying him what they did during the FT years.

This number was too high to start with to play the game the Panthers did with Peppers. Franchise Tag peppers fine, if he won't sign in a timely fashion you pull the FT offer off the table and let him walk. You don't go into July where Peppers knows he either signs the FT contarct or plays for no one that year. By that time you've already ruined the teams opportunity to make any meaningful moves that year.

This is why you see teams use the FT tag on kickers at times, the number is low and the FT tag actually works in your favor. Peppers agent is a genius getting him $37 million over 2 years for 12.5 sacks a year if you think about it for just 1 minute.

I HATE this f***ing excuse for the Delhomme extension...Delhomme pretty much single-handily ruined our whole 2009 season yet it didn't hurt the Panthers

The owner loses 10 billion dollars, but that doesn't matter at all? Wake the hell up!

And I don't even wanna discuss the fact that Delhomme didn't even DESERVE that contract extension...

Here's a more fun question. Who would be better? If Hurney left, who do you hope JR would hire?

GMs for other teams are off-limits, as they don't generally lateral unless they're getting a promotion to president as well.

Nick Caserio or Eric DeCosta

both guys that have worked under superior GMs, DeCosta has proven to have a very good eye scouting draft prospects and Caserio has experience in coaching, personnel and scouting

I think that some of the haters need to make up their mind about whether the team under-achieved because Fox got predictable, or whether it was because Hurney never provided him with the talent necessary to excel.

And Patrick, how would the New England Director of Player Personnel (they don't have a GM) look today had they not gotten lucky with Tom Brady? Would they finally have figured out how to find a cornerback? And in Indy, would Polian look as smart without Manning? There are a ton of elements at play on a pro football team...

No doubt they got extremely lucky with Brady. Chance favors the prepared man as the saying goes but I get what you mean.

But NE has done smart moves to align themselves to get the value where they need with out over spending for talent in areas that many teams hamstrung themselves with bad contracts or for positions that didn't need the money.

NE,Pit and Philly do a great job of keeping the dollars on the right spots while using players by committee's in other areas to maximize BOTH time and talent.

Again, I don't think Hurney is that bad a GM.

    • I don't really like the phrase, "moral victory". I get what's meant by it, but does that mean that if you do the opposite (play poorly but win) it's an immoral victory? 🤔
    • I blame Evero because he is overrated. Vance Joseph created the defense in Denver that he took credit for. Wilks ran the ball down his throat and Darnold had a 103.8 rtg.  Last year we were decent in yards allowed, and horrible in everything else. Only reason? We kept giving up good field position.  He's had his choice of players to bring in since his scheme is so "complicated." Maybe he should stop trying to be so fancy like running Cover 4 on 3rd and 1 earlier and focus on fundamentals like tackling. These years of Eric Washington, Phil Snow, and Evero must have gotten you confused on what a real defense looked like. Go back and watch the McDermott and Wilks years- this dude is sofT.
    • I tried to make it a point in the opening post that I don't think the offense is a finished product. I think we still need more talent at WR, better play calling, catch more consistently, elimate ridiculous penalties,  and be more consistency in scoring points. I'm just saying, they look markedly better than last year imo. They have scored 20 or more in 6 games and 30 or more in 2 games. And that's particularly notable considering they only mustered 10 points and 3 points in first 2 games of this year and they got blanked on 0 points two games in a row to wrap up last season . I'd say that's a market improvement.  I'm not crowning them and saying we have a top 10 offense or anything.  I'm comparing them to themselves in recent history.
