The Problem with music these days

Honestly, I don't understand how people can appreciate music that is not from their generation, especially music from the newer generations (as I do appreciate and like music from the past). Music reflects the ideals, society, current events, etc. of its time.

It's harder for me to relate to those younger than me (I'm sure it is similar for some of you) because of the society they grew up in versus mine. This is why I do not jump to conclusions and label current music/movies/T.V./books (people still read those?)/etc. as being "bad", shallow, or anything like that, as I simply have not experienced the same things as other generations (or hell, people from different backgrounds).

It's hard as hell for me to think of a horse and buggy as being viable means of transportation but I'm sure someone from the 1800's would highly disagree.

I think Katy Perry, Kesha, Britney Spears and the like are all made on an assembly line.

Take about any good looking female with a half-decent voice, dress them in skimpy clothes, give them music to a pop beat, some inane lyrics to sing and a little electronic enhancement...

Bingo. You've got a pop star.

As a member of the younger generation, I can say that although I don't listen to much of the music of the past on a regular basis, I can appreciate how the music then influenced the music now.

The difference between music now and music then is that you can play songs like "Bohemian Rhapsody" and people will always listen to it no matter how many times they hear it. Nowadays, songs are played on the radio for a week then labeled "old" and "overplayed."

In my opinion, it's not so much the music but the way we listen to it that is defining this generation. In a world of instant gratification where we are constantly being bombarded by different forms of media and info, we're constantly looking for the next best song, rather than trying to appreciate the current songs out there. The result you get is the same bland, formulaic pop music lacking substance and creativity.
