Why passing the buck was a dumb move

Mr. Scot

I was there when Dan Henning made similar comments about not having tools to work with. Believe me, the players read things like that loud and clear, though they won't comment on them.

I would too if I were them.

And I'd remember it the next time that guy was standing in front of me saying "Go to it, son. I believe in ya."

yea but isn't that effectively the same thing? Richardson is doing that to the coaches but you expect the coaches to see past it. Why not the players? They're professionals too. I'm not saying it's a healthy way to go about things but to imply that the players need to be babied and tricked into focusing and keeping their morale up is kind of condescending.

Fox saw what was coming, and chose to stay. Did everyone see it but him? doubtful

it was obvious to many people on this board, and if it was obvious to fox;

are the players just stupid?

and if they didn't see it coming, what's their excuse for being for the most part, absolutely dreadful?

everything can't be attributed to bad playcalling.

I have a couple of points on this:

1. Fox knew what was happening, took the "free money" and is now complaining about it. JR gave him an out before the season started, he told him that he could walk, Fox chose to stay.

2. I don't think that the players are going to be upset by this at all, at least not the 40-45 best players on the roster. I am sure that most on the team wish that we had brought in a vet QB, got a FA WR to help mentor the guys, kept Vincent....etc. Only the rooks, and the lower tier players on the team are going to be upset by this. Not the ones that are out there starting.

3. Right now, we are the worst team in the league, and it's not even close.

This season exposed Fox for what he is, and that's a systems guy.

For years now we've known that he's comfortable with his veterans and will stand by them to the bitter end (ie: Delhomme). I think this season, while no coach would've been able to do much with it, really exposed Fox's lacking in ability to take advantage of his player's skills. He's always been big on effort (ie: Hayden), because his system is all about grinding the football and letting the other team make mistakes with it. He makes no adjustments to personnel, which you cannot do as a coach. At least if you don't have complete control over the roster.

He didn't do himself any favors by having a playbook full of passing plays where routes take 10-15yds to develop. Why wouldn't there be more plays designed to dink and dunk similar to what the Rams are doing for Bradford? Not because they're seeing some success with it, but because defenses are going to be coming after untested QBs all day. More 3-step drops and taking advantage of the blitz.

I've gone from being excited about this season, to being... interested? Clausen and Pike were both drafted to address the lack of a franchise QB. At the very least, we know Moore isn't the guy. This gives Clausen and Pike an opportunity for one of them to show that they can stay here when the new coach comes into town and signs an old vet. If both look horrid, expect Clausen to stay and a QB to be taken with the 1st round pick. If both look manageable, then go get a gray beard to teach Jimmy not to shove the ball like a dart into the dline's helmets.

As much as I want AJ Green, he isn't coming to Carolina if he declares for the draft this year. We have way too many options available to us right now. If he does stay for one more year like the rumors around town are saying (AJ's from here :D), then I can make a stretch that he'll be drafted the year later. But with Smitty, Gettis, LaFell, Edwards, Wright, Martin, Thomas, and Clowney all here? Clowney's gone. Martin might follow Fox to wherever he goes. Same with Wright, though he was looking pretty good as the #4 as others noticed.

Oh man.. back on topic. We've gone from being competitive to being an experiment (which can be argued that's what we started as). It's everybody in the organization's fault from top to bottom. From the big wig & front office to the coaches right down to the players.

Mr Scott, do you ever sleep?

That's what my job is for.

They're still human.

Would you work for a guy who told you to your face that you were doing a good job then went behind your back and said "Hey don't blame me if the product is bad. This guy sucks"

I dont like Fox simply because of his coaching style. That being said I'm actually gonna go out on a limb and say that the local media is trying to crucify him. I watched the press conference on sunday and I didnt draw the same conclusion that he was trying to shift the blame.

Then on Monday he had another press conference and they tried to stick it to him again. He said that he likes our roster and bla bla bla....So he was either backpedaling quite a bit from the day before or just being more clear on the facts this time.

Fox may be upset about some of the vets leaving, such as chris harris but this son of a gun was as giddy and happy looking as I've ever seen him after the draft. So he cant blame anybody for the draft picks this year not panning out.

Actually he has backed off of his negative stance somewhat in the observer. Seems some of those comments Sunday were in the heat of battle.

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/11/08/1823490/fox-backs-off-personnel-talk.html

He said several times after the loss to New Orleans he wasn't going to talk about personnel, and said Monday he and general manager Marty Hurney concurred that was for the best.

"Yeah, Marty and I, actually we agreed on that, that that's best because the way things are phrased, and things that come up, I think it's best at this point in this situation," Fox said. "But that by no means is an indictment of our personnel by any stretch.

"I like our football team. I wish we were playing better. We're not. But that's not a negative statement at all."

Fox's contract will expire after this season and it is not expected to be renewed, leading to questions as to whether his short-term resume-polishing goals diverge from the team's long-term plans.

"I'm trying to win games," Fox said. "I think that makes a little bit of sense. I don't get that impression; you'll have to ask people in the organization. From my perspective, I'm extremely competitive and I've got a staff that's extremely competitive."
