I'm all for McDermott. Interesting thing is some in Philly feel they didn't blitz enough against the cards. The numbers certainly back that up.

I honestly don't agree. The difference in those numbers doesn't strike me as that significant. Fans always want to blitz more, but blitzing is what left Fitzgerald in one on one coverage. He and Warner ate that for lunch.

In the end, I think it was just that Todd Haley knew exactly what to do to exploit Jim Johnson's schemes. The Eagles likely need to hope that tape doesn't get as much play as it's expected to (that, or that other teams don't have the personnel to do what Arizona did).

How about John Teerlink?? He has been the DL coach of the Colts for the last 7 years. Won SB's with 2 different teams. Pass Rush Specialist

He is to defensive line coaches what Alex Gibbs is to offensive line coaches. Some opposing offensive coaches have been said to consider him dirty. I don't really want to see our defense take on that kind of persona.

Yea, but by the same coin, there aren't many teams that have receivers like Larry Fitzgerald.

Arizona's hitting their stride this season. It likely won't last into the next one, and there's no doubt in my mind Jim Johnson and his disciples will tweak the system a bit to counter the kind of offensive the Cards put on them in the future.

McDermott. good young defensive coach, and if he does well he can have the HC job when Foxys contracts up. I still believe Fox's arrogance and hard headiness is going to be his undoing. Personally I think the players & coaches are not buying his sch-tick anymore

Herm .. I don't won't him , another Fox puppet. Plus with all his rants and soundbites over the past years I think he has lost some credibility with the players.

Blitzing didn't leave Fitzgerald open, it was the right thing to do. Failure to properly execute the blitz left him open. We don't have the personnel or scheme to blitz adequately. If we want a Jim Johnson-style blitzing D we need a total defensive shakeup, not only the coaches, but pretty much a clean slate, save for the safties and linebackers.

And seeing what McDermott has done in the past with safties and linebackers, working with our stable should be his wet dream.

Fans always love the blitzing approach. Coaches, even aggressive ones like Jim Johnson, know that it can be exploited.

Blitzing means you have to cover one on one because you're devoting personnel to the pass rush rather than coverage. A receiver like Fitzgerald is not someone I'd normally want covered one on one unless I had Champ Bailey or Nnamdi Asomugha back there (Assante Samuel doesn't cut it, especially not when he's gimpy).

It's a philosophical question. Do you stop the pass on the throwing end or on the receiving end?

Blitzing teams concentrate on the throwing end. Problem is, if you blitz an offense with a reliable receiver and a QB who knows how to take advantage, your coverage guys can get burned...a lot.

Teams that choose coverage have to be able to pressure with just four guys. If you can't get pressure, then the QB has time to wait and unless your coverage is exceptional, eventually someone is going to get open.

Bottom line for this one: Todd Haley knew exactly how to attack Jim Johnson's blitzes. More blitzing wouldn't have saved the Eagles. Better play by the secondary might have.

The only thing that we would need in order to execute a scheme like that is another very good cornerback. If we can trade Peppers for a high draft pick then there are corners in this draft that will eventually be stars in this league (Malcolm Jenkins comes to mind). If the Jags would take Pep then that would be step #1 to landing a top tier cornerback.

Fitz is just a beast that presents problems however you cover him. One on one, better get the QB. Double cover, he shows time and time again he can simply out leap the coverage. Just hope to contain him and beat the rest of the team. He is the exception that can beat any kind of good coverage.

He is being used right also and thats what makes him look unstoppable. That and Warners uncanny ability to get the ball out before the blitz.

    • I've got mixed feelings on this one. If Carolinaย had a stellar front office that was known for nailing their draft picks in most years, then I'd be down with a move down the draft board to acquire an extra pick. Unfortunately, our draft history this decade leaves a lot to be desired....especially in round 2. If we picked the best player at any position (outside of QB, HB, OL,) it would immediately improve ourย team. And, dropping down doesn't guarantee we'd pick the right guy in the 1st round or with the extra draft choice acquired in the trade. I can see maybe going from 8 to 12, butย no further than 15. Even going to 15 would bother me b/c that means Carolina would miss out on 7 blue chip players before they're on the clock.
