Fiz's 7 point plan

Biggest question will be do we give up on Clausen or not.

Everything else I agree with.

It's just hard for me to judge a rookie QB's performance with what we have to work with on offense.

I agree.

But I also think Luck's potential ceiling is way higher than Clausen's.

Buffalo is drafting the best QB on the board at #1 and Dallas might very well be #2. And since we beat San Fran we might be looking at #4.

If Jerry Jones is stupid enough to draft a QB, then he's stupid enough to draft someone from his Alma Mater.

List of many QB's to become free agents

Peyton Manning, IND

Brett Favre, MIN

Donovan McNabb, WAS

Matt Moore, CAR

Kyle Orton, DEN

Matt Hasselbeck, SEA

Alex Smith, SF

Troy Smith, BAL

Trent Edwards, BUF

JT O'Sullivan, CIN

Seneca Wallace, CLE

Shaun Hill, DET

Brodie Croyle, KC

Chad Pennington, MIA

Tyler Thigpen, MIA

Tarvaris Jackson, MIN

Jim Sorgi, NYG

Kellen Clemens, NYJ

Bruce Gradkowski, OAK

Michael Vick, PHI

Dennis Dixon, PIT

Billy Volek, SD

Kerry Collins, TEN

Chris Simms, TEN

Rex Grossman, WAS

That's not a great list overall.

There's no way Manning leaves the Colts. Even allowing for that, doubt we pay more than others would.

McNabb and Hasselbeck are only good choices if we go WCO. Vick's not ever going to be a Panther. Collins won't ever be one again. Smith would be the second coming of David Carr (#1 bust). Gradkowski may be doing well in Oakland, but he's not really what you want in a vet. Don't know how much I trust that it isn't an illusion.

Pennington is old. Edwards is terrible. Simms has no spleen. Most of the rest are unproven.

Of the bunch, Orton's about the only realistic possibility I'd want.

This is all dependent on coaching hires and personnel movement around the league.

I've been wrong before but I think Moore and Pike go, and Clausen stays on but is a backup. He'll be given some looks by the new coaching staff. What sucks personally is I wanted him to be our starter, the guy's one of my favorite Panthers but at the same time I'm not blind, if you can't produce out there, you don't get to play, and that's a shame he hasn't produced anything since the first Saints game. I hope he gets another shot here, or just stays on the team at least. But it's tough to find favorite players on this team because most of them will be gone next year.

Orton is the best/most realistic name off that list. I wouldn't be too surprised if Denver let him walk ushering in the The Golden Calf of Bristol era. Also don't be so sure the Bills won't win a game this year they can put up points and have been incredibly close to winning some games.

1. Sign a new coach (see Mr. Scot's thread for more info)

My top two targets for the Panthers are Frazier and Harbaugh.

agreed...and, yeah, frazier will probably be taking over the vikings.

2. Draft a QB

Luck or Newton, whomever is there. I'd prefer Luck. The Panthers have ignored this for too long and it's time to bite the bullet and just do that. Assuming of course they don't make a play for Peyton Manning.

i've got a feeling that peyton will be hitting the market. absolutely would love him here, but i really don't see that happening. i like luck and can see drafting him in the first 3. if he doesn't fall to us then trade the pick away and draft fairley and cam with the picks we get. hurney can work some big time draft day trades. getting both of them can be done and both would fill huge needs.

3. Sign a Veteran QB

Just sign Hasselbeck, or Pennington, or poo bring back Kerry Collins.

pennington is my top choice here. assuming that peyton is out of the question...pennington is the smartest QB that would be available. having a new QB starting, whoever that is, you're going to need someone carrying the clipboard who has a good bit of experience and a nice football IQ.

4. Let Moore walk, get rid of Clausen

moore can be a good backup...behind a solid vet QB. we don't have that here and likely won't. just let him go. clausen...i'm not sold one way or the other. in the right system with the right coach i think he could be good, but i don't know that i want to spend time figuring that out. actually, if harbaugh comes here, i'd be happy with whatever QB decision he made.

5. Sign a free agent wide receiver
i would like to trade smith for a younger model. trade smith for a 3rd then use that and another late pick for some young stud WR. i don't really care if they can mentor the young guys.
6. Depth
totally agree here. we have too many projects on this team. those spots could have been used for solid backups who know what they are doing. we don't necessarily need starters in a lot of spots...just people who know how to play on the pro level. in the trenches is the biggest need.
7. Re-sign the core
agreed here as well, though i would consider williams to be part of that core and don't consider him a luxury. when we have a young green QB, we have to have an RB corps that can carry the ball 550+ times and do it well. i don't trust stewart/sutton/goodson to be able to do that. i would work to keep the 5 we have (williams/stewart/sutton/goodson/fiametta) and build around that, though if we can trade off sutton for a 5th or 6th i wouldn't complain too much. i just don't think we should mess with one of the few offensive strengths we have here.

i'm thinking that peyton very well could be on the move. i really don't think he's happy with caldwell and company. if dungy gets back into coaching, could we see a peyton/dungy reunion? who knows. what matters is that we probably won't be anywhere near the top of the list of teams that will 1) pay for him or 2) he would want to play for.

not a fan of hasslebeck. i like mcnabb, though. he still has some left in him contrary to what that mcdaniels wannabe kyle shanny says. mcnabb would also be a good QB to use as a placeholder for a young QB. i'd much rather a QB learn from him than someone like jake.

pennington is my top choice for clipboard carrier if we get a young QB. i agree with everything else, though.

    • There's some big assumptions in here - first, I think Canales HAS helped Bryce a poo ton. To pretend he hasn't is asinine. Has he fixed him?  I mean, the dude looks like he could perhaps be a backup or low-end starter now, whereas he looked like he didn't belong in the NFL a year ago. You're talking about a coach that brought one of the worst NFL QBs of all time to a point where he may actually be a low-end starter. That IS impressive. Second, the bolded. Come on - given the offense, the dude is far from "trending towards bust." He definitely needs work but he's shown an impressive ability to get open. He's contributing to an anemic offense. The dude is our leading receiver (though he'll be #2 in yardage by end of season by a little, as Thielen does better per game).  As to his coaching, he had this team competing and believing against 3 of the better teams in the NFL, despite the lack of talent, and despite our QB situation.  Yes, things fell apart vs DAL, and he was outcoached. But that will happen with young coaches IMO.  I don't think it indicates he cant' be better. The idea of "pulling off the bandage" is ridiculous. Who would want to coach here if we fired this guy after one season?
    • Whatever they are in totality the cowboys are beat up all to hell on both sides of the ball and even that was too much for lil Bryce to overcome.  Bryce defenders have to hype up every other team and trash every other part of the panthers just because of the situation they’ve put themselves in.
    • JB had a first round grade in the eyes of a lot scouts based on HIS TALENT LEVEL. If not for the injury he would have gone higher in the draft, possibly between the middle and the end of round 1. To get him just before the 50th pick is a steal. He'd be on a 4 year deal. You can't even renegotiate until the end of the season 3. You're basically paying him nothing for 3 seasons. I don't buy into all back are interchangeable. No they're not. You have average backs, good backs, then your great-exceptional backs. The latter category doesn't grow on trees. If a back is special it pays to keep them. The key is knowing the difference between the first two categories and the third one.
