Fiz's 7 point plan

Agreed with plan...

And I still don't understand those that DON'T want to draft a QB... We have to. We've tried the whole, draft a guy where he falls to us, and it hasn't worked.

You've got to find your franchise QB through the draft... Show me how many teams had long-term, sustained success with a QB they didn't draft themselves? Teams that sign QBs to come in and be their guy end up being stop-gap guys, and they were able to sign them in the first place for a reason. There's always an exception, but this is the rule.

Only thing that really sucks is WR should have been addressed this year with Boldin or Marshall. Maybe we'll go after VJ, but I doubt it with his baggage.

What happens with Clausen depends a lot on the next head coach. Hire a guy who wants to go West Coast with the offense and the odds of his sticking around go up. Even if you don't, new coaches often come in thinking "he was only bad because I wasn't coaching him". No guarantee the next guy won't still see him as potentially good.

Regarding Luck, he's reportedly stated that he will consult with Harbaugh as far as staying in school or going pro. No stretch to think that Harbaugh getting a pro job on a team with a high pick affects how that particular discussion goes.

If the Panthers wind up with the second or third overall pick, they might have to trade to get the number one in order to get Luck. Buffalo (still currently holding the number one) could still be thinking QB. Yes, Ryan Fitzpatrick is doing decent, but given the choice between Fitzpatrick and Luck, who would you take?

Realistically speaking, you increase your chances of the team targeting Luck significantly by hiring Harbaugh.

Yeah, ideally I see us taking Luck and hopefully Harbaugh will be ready for an NFL gig and we offer him the job.

If all that falls into place, I have no concerns about eventually winning the #1 pick. We can't score points and Buffalo can. Eventually they're going to win a couple.

if you don't want a QB, the only choices are fairley or peterson imho

I may warm up to Luck, but it's doubtful he'll be there unless the Bills go on a winning streak. Newton has The Golden Calf of Bristol disease and I'll empty the bar of whiskey if we take Locker.

Peterson hasn't really wow'd me this year, but his talent is undeniable. If the Boys pick in front of us, he's gone.

Fairley maybe, but right now I'd prefer AJ Green or Amukamara if we have a top 5 pick.

Sucks to have a high pick when there's no elite level linemen on either side of the ball coming out this year.

lets just stockpile QBs for the sole reason of "well, eventually one of these guys is going to work out"

i'm not even being sarcastic

Only if we hire Jon Gruden.

I don't want a rookie receiver, regardless of how good he is. We're young enough there already.

Signing a vet is a better option, but don't be surprised if such a move also increases the chances of Steve Smith no longer being on roster.

Even if we have the 1st overall pick and draft Luck, I like the idea of going after a guy like McNabb and having him be the starter so Luck can develop under him.

I think we NEED to re-sign Williams, jury is still out on Stewart in my mind. This year has shown that Williams has the ability to make something out of nothing and Stewart does not.

Yep. I'd rather have Williams. Also, keep Clausen around he is very young. Get rid of Moore and draft a franchise QB in the first top 5. Trade up if we have to. Let Clausen compete with real competition. Of course I wouldn't mind Matt Moore for our backup either. One thing is for sure our top pick must go to a QB.

You really don't have to look too far, the team we played against this weekend is a pretty notable exception. You could also use Kurt Warner in Arizona, (which would have been longer term if not for the team's insistence on trying to make Matt Leinart the guy). It remains to be seen if it will work over the long term, but there's a team in Philly that's doing alright with a free agent signing at QB.

Biggest question will be do we give up on Clausen or not.

Everything else I agree with.

I think Clausen should just start the rest of the year regardless of how he plays. He'll either get better and we'll have us a QB or we'll know we need to use our top 3 pick on one.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
