Jerry's Offseason Purge

Right guard is a big part of it. No credible downfield threat is an even bigger part.

Fiammetta, LaFell and (to a lesser degree) Gettis aren't the blockers that Hoover and Moose were in their prime, but they might not be all that far from the blockers that Moose and Hoover would be now. Neither one was what he used to be, even last year.

For me it's the line woes and the lack of respect for the pass that are most killing our run game. One of those problems is at least semi-fixable if Otah gets healthy. Not sure the other gets fixed this season, but I can certainly hope it does.

They are valid points. You can't overlook the line play and the passing game if you can call it that, which is anemic. Still we were able to run last year even with 9 in the box. We can attribute it to a number of things just like we can do the same to explain the failure of this team to generate consistent offense. We differ on how important Moose and Hoover were to our offense. I am one to believe that those two guys were worth more to the team that just their remaining physical prowess. Both were blue collar hardworking recognized leaders who would have served as tremendous mentors for the younger guys all while still playing as well or even better than the rookies this year. They were veteran leaders who epitomized the physical style of offense that made us successful. I don't see that physical presense in this offense.

I was not opposed to getting younger just not all at once replacing veterans with guys with little or no experience. I thought they were guys we needed to keep. It might be me but I suppose I value experience, leadership and mentoring skills more important than most do here.
