Wireless help

I have TWC Road Runner modem that i then have conncted to an older Linksys wireless router. at least I have had to unplug the router and let it reboot because it seems to "lock up" and stop the internet.

The last 4 days this has happened at least 12+ times a day! So I bought new TRENDnet wireless router. I have followed the instruction 4-6 times. I get almost to the end and the on screen instruction tell me that the modem needs to reboot. So I click on reboot like it says. Sometimes it gives me an error msg, and sometimes it says reboot successful.

When I get all the way through set up and I'm done. No internet.

I got frustrated and went back to the old Linksys. Today it was worse. The internet must have gone up and down at least 20+ times. I called TWC and they reset my modem. They also said that they show no service interuption. I disconnected my router and direct connected my computer right to my TWC modem. Still the internet goes up and down, yet all the lights on the modem stay on!

After twc reset my modem, I reconnected my Linksys wireless router. Now that doesn't hane any internet at all. I have defragged, ran my virus scan, cleaned up my garbage files, nothing has helped. The internet keeps going up and down. With the router directly connected to my computer at least when it goes up and down, I don't have to reset the modem after about 5 minutes the internet comes back.

Any suggestions? BTW, I'm running Windows 7 & IE8. Maybe I should try the Beta version of IE9?

Try Firefox. Don't install the IE9 Beta, actually I would have told you not to install IE8 either ;) How does your Internet work if you use an ethernet cable (by pass wireless).

The way TWC cable modems and their DHCP works, you will need to restart the cable modem before hooking up a new device to it (computer, wireless router, firewall, etc.).

I had the same situation with Time Warner. And I did plug my laptop directly into the cable modem and it still had problems. Time Warner said it was my laptop. I said, but it works fine at work and we don't show any problems with the router.

So I got frustrated, unplugged the modem, and called them back. They said they couldn't see the modem, and I said (innocently) well its plugged in but all the lights are out. They replaced it, and the replacement worked like a charm. :)

run a cable directly into the cable modem to your PC and see if anything changes. Thats an easy way to see whats up.

This could also be something with authentication...I have DSL now and its a lot harder than cable modem

Cable modems don't use authentication like DSL does.

Oh yeah, I forgot to put this earlier, TWC sucks! I can't wait to get rid of them at my company.

I am soooo sick and tired ot TWC! I called them again today and they said the same thing that they did yesterday! "We don't see a problem with your modem." It's up now, but wait 5 minutes and it will be down again!

TWC said yesterday that they would monitor my line for 14 hours and see what's going on. When I asked them if they did, the guy said, I don't see any problems. My desk top is now wired directly into the modem, no wireless router in between. And it still goes up and down. The strange thing is, the lights stay on when it stops working.

Here I go again, it just stopped working! Now it's back up! Ever since they started doing construction down the street, I have had problems. 10 minutes ago, every time I tried to log into this site, it would say that I have to register! TWC is down again! Just in the short time I am typing this!

Now it's back up. They are going to send a tech out tomorrow morning. Every other month I have a TWC tech at my apartment. If it isn't for the internet, it's for my digital cable! I'll be so happy to finally get moved!

The thing is, they are just pinging the IP address of the cable modem. Ping is a dumb protocol and doesn't really give you an accurate reading if something is working or not. You need to request your trouble ticket to be escalated past the Help Desk.

Just log into their router, change the password and make it yours.

<<<<<<rep plz

It's slower and besides that doesn't help my desk top computer.

Another thing that I did fix. I was running the 2011 version of TWC Computer Associates anti-virus software. I had just downloaded the 2011 version from the 2010 about the same time I started having all this router & modem problems. So now I have dumped that and installed AVG Antivirus. I will see if that helps any.

You also could be having signal strength issues... Especially if TWC has done any work to do in the area lately...

They had to put an amp on our house at one time, and then forgot it was there once they added lines on the road and boosted the signal...

This caused the digital signal coming through my lines to be too powerful, and it messed up our digital boxes, and caused our modem to crap out at random intervals...

You can exchange your modem any time at a local TWC site btw... Just take it in and tell them it stopped working... We've had to do that in the past as well with dead/dying modems...
