What can cause my laptop to do this

Gah...don't buy one from Best Buy. They are ridiculously expensive. The top result on that link was a 2GB for $15.

Skip all that nonsense and go to Big Lots to see what they have especially if you need it quick. I've also been buying all the cables for work from there. I see no sense in spending $20+ for a printer cable. Or more than $8 for an ethernet cable no matter how long.

those "cables" are usually very thin ribbon connectors (makes sense) that seat into their connectors by flimsy pressure locks

The same thing happened with my husband's work computer once - only thing with his is it was fixed in house for a day. My computer was gone for weeks.

Funny thing, my 1 year warranty expires tomorrow. I had a year to choose to extend the warranty for an additional 2 years for $89 bucks. I just did it. I figure if it happened once, it might happen again - or something else might happen.
