Verge, why do you like Mykel Williams?

He has ridiculous upside.  Long and athletic and he could be great.  He is underrated if anything IMO.  Before the injury he was flying around causing all kindza problems.  I still like Walker a little more but both are great prospects

Overview

An upside prospect with loads of traits, Williams simply needs more snaps and more time to fill out his frame. He is an explosive athlete who uses his exceptional length to keep tackles and tight ends at the end of his punch. He plays a little too tall at the point and needs to get stronger to shed blocks more quickly, but he plays with good physicality in the trenches and is never pushed around. He’s still learning moves and counters but already has a big bull rush, good secondary effort and the closing burst to become a sack blanket in the pocket. He’s not there yet, but Williams’ improvement to become an impactful 4-3 base end feels inevitable.

there's also something to be learned here.  In the last few years, Atlanta has drafted a TE and a RB in the top 10.  Earlier in the year, Allgeier had more yards than Bijan.  And the TE has under performed and doesn't seem interested.  

I don't like spending Top 10 picks on those two positions.  Run CMC paid off as a top 10 pick.  Not all running backs do.  And we have a segment who want us to take a TE this year at 8.  Admitted, Warren does more than Pitts, who was supposed to be a major matchup problem with his speed and height.  Maybe he could be with a better OC and QB.   

Every pick is a risk.  I'd rather take that risk on a position that affects the game more.  Exceptions granted for the right guy.  Warren may be that guy, but I want a playmaker like Jalon or a trade back.

The NFL needs to stop overdrafting these types and let them do what they should do - play another year of college ball.

Yeah, Warren "does more than Pitts," which is important, but the most profound difference--that should be at least stated---is that Warren is a dawg and Pitts is not. That's super important when making that comparison.

Demeanor and lauded as a leader too!! Pitts was a 1 trick pony coming out with upside. Watching Warren  launch himself over piles to score a td run, is the grit we need. Reminded me of Tolbert , Stew or Cam fighting for 1 yard often. I get the not wanting a tight end early bc of others but he just plays angry and with passion.

LOL reads again...it says IDL

Mykel was asked to do the dirty work so to speak much more than Walker last year but he held his own in the run game and still flashed pass rush.

I know we like him quite a lot so have been trying to come around.

His interviews available online show a really cool dude, seems to genuinely want to get better and enjoys the game.

He has the run defense prowess. Very strong, not elite but could become elite.

So you’re banking on him developing his pass rush skills. The notable limitations IMO are his athleticism and burst aren’t what you’d expect for a guy with his size and skills. He has a grind it out motor and solid leverage skills, but doesn’t have the feel for the snap or the quickness you want in a R1 edge. That’s what I find to be the tough sell. Awareness, snap feel, and quickness not super teachable.

Stepping back and putting him in perspective of this class, it’s not some huge reach, but you really should be getting a ton more with a top-10 overall pick.  Feel like there’s a lot of more sure fire talent with just as high ceilings, but we may weigh our defensive need and land him.

Well said.  we usually develop our opinions based on the websites we frequent, highlight reels, discussion boards, and NFL Network.  In that process, we call ourselves "informed," but we really are not.  Unfortunately, neither are the experts.  It still blows my mind that first rounders have successful careers 53% of the time, and second rounders are about half of that.

So as hard as we (and they) pound the table for this player or that player, it is a crap shoot in the first round and in the second, it is worse than the odds playing craps in Vegas.  And they (the experts) have combines and pro days and interviews etc.  and they still suck at it.

All that to say, I am wrong as much as the GMs are-that should make me feel good, but it does not.  You have to recall who you pounded the table for in the drafts four or five years ago and see where they are now.

Acting like I know and they do not is stupid, so I hope that they see what I cannot. 

I think the best chance of hitting a home run in round 1:  Jeanty.

I also posted my edges! Mykel was number two. 

I think looking at Georgia's sack numbers or win rates or whatever doesn't really tell the whole story. Their entire defense is loaded and different guys had different assignments. Is Mykel the most refined pass rusher in the world? Not really, no. Is he built like Myles Garrett and is he ridiculously effective in run defense.

I see people talking about low floor and that really isn't the reality here. No matter where you look at it, Mykel is effective as a defender. He is going to walk in and be a top tier run wrecker, and assuming he gets healthy it's not hard to envision him becoming a 10+ sack guy at the next level. There are games where he is just tossing around SEC lineman which doesn't happen very often.
