Smith's leadership makes up for the lost step

Since they are the same talent wise, maybe Fitzgerald would actually take a reciever under his wing like Moose did for him. He also wouldn't cheap shot any teamates. We instantly have a better leader.

I'm sure Ken Lucas wasn't exactly innocent on that punch to the nose.

And BTW...its hard to cheapshot someone with a punch to the nose. They were apparently face to face, and the big man won.

You can't debate ability and leadership interchangeably.

Edit:

I think he broke one on his TD in the Tampa game. At least everyone was saying he did so they didn't give the credit to Moore for a TD pass.

Ok, the thread is about Smith's lost step being made up by his leadership(lol right).

You said talent wise they were close, I don't agree, but instead of butting heads about it. I brought up Smith's lack of leadership as the deal breaker.

MomLover said one game does not make a career, I responded by saying he hasn't broke a tackle all year which YAC was his game.

I'm arguing on two different tangents with two people.

THis thread is not about comparing him to Fitzgerald or how many drops he has or any other ignorant argument being carried over from another thread or generated by some guy with a grudge.

This is about Smitty showing his leadership skills by taking the blame, being accountable, and making a committment to doing what he can to make things better. We have talent on this team but we lack veteran leadership and guys stepping up and taking the team on their shoulders.

I have never heard Smith talk like this before. It is clear he is beginning to fill the void left by all the veterans who were cut. I think it is very welcome and perhaps more guys stepping up like he is may help this team get on a winning streak.

So much of winning in this league and performing is more about what is between your ears than how fast you can run or how well you can catch. Smitty is stepping up big time for the first time I can remember. He is setting a great example for the other receivers and the offense in general.

One final thing. I'm glad Smith showed his teamates how to handle problems. Send the bitch to hospital. That is what being a leader is all about.

This isn't the first time a heard Smitty talk like this. I've seens threads for the last 6 years where Smitty will say something and all the Smitty kids will say "My look how much he has grown.", "He is getting it now." , "He has come a long way." Then boom he complains about his contract. Boom he punches a teamate out for the second time. Boom he says the rookies aren't kissing his ass. I've seen too many tantrums thrown on the sideline by this guy "who is getting it" for my liking.

That was years ago and he learned a lot from that. It isn't about making mistakes, everyone does that. it is what you learn from making them. Why don't you discuss what Lucas showed him about forgiveness for the sake of the team and how Smitty admitted that he had been distant from the team and self absorbed. By Lucas's example he learned about being part of the team and putting the team above self.

Part of what Smith is doing now is using the things he has learned over the past decade and putting them into practice now.

Why don't you take Lucas's advice and forgive a little. It isn't what Smitty was but what he is now. And frankly I like it.

He broke a tackle on the play where he fumbled last week.

Link???? Now you are making things up to justify your own arguments.

Anyone who knows Smitty over the years wouldn't say he was mature, a leader or anything else. Like I said this is the first time I have seen him step up like this.

Good post Panthers55. Its good to see other Panther fans recognize the intangibles that Smitty brings to this team. Panther fans that are overconcerned with egos and attitudes are losers in life. They've never been great at anything, so they dont understand the confidence and swagger that comes with that. They're put off by that. Not all of us Panther fans want everything associated with this franchise to be boring and lifeless. Some of us Panther fans care more about winning than if I would get a beer with this guy or that guy. I blame Jerry Richardson, he's too image conscious and its trickled down to alot of our fanbase. I just wish we had more players on our team with Smitty's fire and desire on the field. We'd be alot better franchise.

Well I've never seen a top performer in athletics or in the business world that wasn't a bit prickly and a little self-absorbed.

Smith has done great things for the Carolina Panthers.

I have one vivid memory of Steve Smith. The night he broke his leg and as my tickets are on that side of the field, 30 yard line, Panthers side, I watched him crawl to the sideline with that broken leg, his hands pulling him so that people would not see him carried off the field. He is that prideful.

He is not a perfect person. He is not even a perfect receiver. He is a fine football player who if he played on a real team with a real QB (insert Brady, Manning, Brees, Rivers here) in my opinion he'd be a shoo-in for the HOF and I'm sure that must eat at him because I believe he's one player that money isn't the only thing.

Frankly, IMHO, it's time get off Steve. There are so many other issues with the franchise right now, top to bottom, that his issues are just not that great in comparison.
