The Progression of David Gettis

Question for anyone who has the game on DVR...was Gettis just not targeted like he should be against STL, or was he covered well and unable to get open most of the game? I'd like to see film of him last week to find out whether he was getting overlooked or Spagnuolo watched his tendencies against SF and he was found out.

I think it has to do more with LaFell being a better blocker and Fox liking that attribute in a #2 receiver since we are a "run first" team. I was appalled at his lack of snaps/targets considering his previous performance but after Fox said the SF game was "too aggressive" it shouldn't surprise me at all.

The better question is...why can Matt Moore see the field better, and spread the ball around better in one game....and not the next?

Was the rams pass rush that much better that moore was as comfortable making his reads?

He didn't show that tendancy in his games prior to this season.

Because fans don't know what they are watching.

When he completes a pass to the left to his first read and after the defender leaves the other receiver the other receiver jumps up and down. Uninformed fan goes "Aw we coulda had a TD"

Also when he does read the field, established #1 receiver along with other receivers give up on routes and leave QB hanging out to dry. Now QB only tries to hit first read.

I think that Moore doesn't know what he is seeing, or he just can't compute what is happening fast enough.

For example, the first play from scrimmage, the "flea-flicker".

Yes, the safety did not commit to the run. However, he had not committed to cover deep either, he was frozen. Lafell had his man beat and the safety was last man standing. The safety was still turned to the LOS and with a full head of steam Lafell would have burned by him easily. Moore should have realized this and gone deep to Lafell, but he can not visualize how a play is going to form he only sees what the play is at the moment.

Instead of seeing that the safety was going to have to turn and get to speed to catch Lafell who was already at full speed, Moore flips out and throws a falling down pass to Smith who was the crossing under route and an INT.

Horrible play. What should have at the least been an incompletion and a sign to the Rams that we were going to stretch the field instead turns into a disaster because of his incompetence.

While you show his "incompetence" in one play I can show a play where he has been competent.

The redemption TD pass to Gettis against SF. It was 3rd down and 2 and Smitty is dragging underneath at about 5 yards and is fairly wide open. Gettis in no way has his man beat by that much but Moore "visualized" how the play would turn out and threw it to Gettis for the TD. If he isn't confident in the way that play turns out then he leaves himself and the team in a 4th and 2.

Tell me what other bad decisions he made in the STL game because honestly there weren't many. It's been said many times on here, and alluded to by Smith, and by Fox that the last pick was Smith's fault. The second pick was not a decision problem but rather his arm got hit as he threw.

I just want to see some of his "incompetence" on display.

Edit:

Please note a "Moore homer" did not turn this thread into a Matt Moore thread but rather someone else did. It was a perfectly good topic to discuss from LPF and it got ruined.

It is much simpler than that. Moore throws to the guys he can see have separation or are open rather than throwing to a spot where he knows the receiver is supposed to be because he has no confidence in the receiver being there. There is no chemistry at all. Guys aren't picking up hot reads, receivers are breaking off routes, even Smitty didn't even turn around on that ball to him for the interception.

Moore has been burned enough by receivers not being where they are supposed to be that he is gun shy to throw it unless he can see he is open. Problem is though, that by the time the ball gets there the safety or help over the top has arrived as well.

I wouldn't disagree that Moore sometimes doesn't see the field or locks on one guy, but I also think that the receivers have given him little help in building the chemistry needed for a quarterback to fire the ball before a receiver breaks knowing he is going to be there when the ball arrives.

It is hard to say at this point whose fault it is without knowing what was called in the huddle. But the end result is poor play and lack of a passing game.
