Randy Moss released for being Steve Smith

Moss is one example. He's far from the only one, and arguably not the worst one (that title likely belongs to Roethlisberger) but he still is one.

Regardless of who it is, or who they play for, the principle is the same.

No one should get a free pass to be an a--hole just because they can play football, or sing, or act, or look good, run a business, or govern, or anything else.

Character should always be more valuable than talent, but these days its just the opposite :(

I really believe Moss is the first guy to do this... Not excusing the behavior, because its actually pretty sickening, but Id bet that there are guys that have done this, and gets swept under the rug. Either way, Childress is still an idiot, and will lose his job.

yea so randy is a douche.....so is half the league.....the vikings ate a 3rd round pick for this bullpoo?

This philosophy has pretty much ensured Jerry Richardson goes to the grave a losing owner. A good owner knows how to recognize and bring in both. The Panthers have always sacrificed talent for company men. And what has it got them? Being known as one of the worst franchises in football? I think some of the folks in the Panthers front office should've been assistant principals or schoolteachers since they're so rabid about conformity and discipline. Leave the football to the folks who can handle this business. Employing and dealing with superstars is part of running a successful sports franchise. If the people on Graham and Mint cant handle that, maybe they should pick another profession.

Meat asked Smitty for an autograph, and he told him to fug off. He's been bitter ever since. And this thread title should say "Randy Moss released for being Brett Favre". But I wouldnt expect Meat to post something like that.

I've never asked anyone for an autograph (at least one that was for me personally), and Smitty and I never had any problems personally. When you watch someone treat your coworkers like crap for seven years, though, it makes you wonder why people speak of him like he's "the heart of the team".

Actually, that philosophy has served them well. It's when they vary from it that they have gotten burned. Carruth. Keyshawn. Chuck Smith. Jason Peter.

What were they saying about Kerry Collins when he was drafted? He was pretty much a drunk early on.

Just look at how successful the Bengals have been with their "talent over character" approach!

The Bengals QB is overrated.

And besides, I'm not saying "talent over character", just saying "talent + character". You need both to be successful. And not everyone who is super talented lacks character. I'm all for and about class, but got damn man, you play to win the game!

As opposed to great owners like Al Davis, Jerry Jones and Mike Brown?

The notion that the Panthers don't care about talent is just silly. The difference between them and the Bengals is they won't excuse major character flaws just for the sake of talent. And they're far from alone in that. Plenty of teams expect their players to be good citizens.

But go ahead and cheer for the Roethlisbergers of the world if you like, not me. There are things in this world that are more important than winning football games.

Because he is the heart and soul of this football team. He's the best football player this team has ever had. And thats not to say that we havent had other football players who came here after being great elsewhere for many years. But for us, the Carolina Panthers, our franchise in Charlotte, North Carolina...Steve Smith is the best football player this franchise has had. You and your coworkers should consider yourselves privileged to have worked around him.

Come on now, Chuck Smith's knees were shot before he ever even signed a contract for us apparently.

Jason Peter had a bad neck.

They could have been axe murderers but that isn't why they didn't perform on the field.

He's not the "heart of the team" because of his character but because of his talent; he has been the core of the team and why the team has won games.

Of course not; it's completely O.K. for Brett to be a douche.

Honestly I don't. Just makes me sick to see people idolize him and rip on Jake.

I like both of them. ;)
