Our offense is too loaded for us to be loaded in defense

Ok, yea Jake Delhomme sucks but other than his dismal performance against the Cards our offense is one of the best in the league and lets be honest, no one this off season is going to try to get more better than delhomo so what if he bounces back and eliminates his garbage games he was prone to this season because he was getting adjusted to his new elbow. Our offense is fine, no tweaking needed, some depth at QB and FB are all that are in question.

Defense on the other hand... we have just about the same kind of defense right now as the cards have... a non-fearsome run of the mill defense but u know what... thats the price u pay for having as strong of an offense as we have and u know why a high powered offense doesn't fair well in the playoffs? look no further than our last game of the season to see why that model is unsuccessful, inconsistancy.

We need to improve our front 4 rush, our run d is fine, it had some holes in away games in the second half but that comes from our starters beeing gassed, something that has more to do with depth, conditioning, and the experience to not be consumed by mental errors. Mental errors should be less prolific next season, but depth and conditioning fall hand in hand, you can't condition your starters too much later in the season if you don't have adequate back ups and not to mention they will tire out later in the season anyways from all the time they are getting on the field.

This leaves me with one conclusion, we must improve our depth on the d-line, our secondary will be fine next year with marshall, gamble, and wilson, who knows we might actually even get Asomugha. Our linebackers will be fine as well with the depth Conner will provide among our other back-up linebackers. so back to what i said at first... our d-line, we know that johnson is a fine pass-rusher and that our starting defensive tackles are excellent as well, but its our depth behind them that will make us suffer the most. Brayton is a fine back-up defensive end but he provides little pressure from the other end and is above average at run support.

so in the first round of the playoffs if we get our picks in return for julius we need to go after a defensive end AND we need to give the money we intended to give peppers to haynesworth straight up. then we will have damione lewis as a great back-up and a first round defensive end to go with him and charles johnson. Boom our team is complete. Hell we can even go after a FA cornerback if we want to and we need to get a QB in the 3rd or later. there has never in the history of the NFL been a successful 2nd round QB thats y i say that 3rd.

Dont forget all the comebacks delhomo did mount this season: week 1, week 2, week 4(domination), week 5 (domination), week 7(domination), week 8 (domination), week 13, week 14(domination), and week 15 (domination)

He only tried to throw away one of our games we lost and that was against oakland. Against the Vikes it was coaches fault and the players fault for not stepping up. Against the Bucs is was us giving them short field position all day and Rosario Dawson and forcing Delhomo into bad situations that weren't his fault. Against Oakland... it was all his fault and it was after a bye week. Against the Falcons it was more the teams fault and a matter of luck running out. No QB in this league is perfect 100% of the time, just look at drew brees, eli manning, and payton manning. All them had so-so games and just lost it. We almost came back against the falcons thanks to delhomo but the defense fuged it up for us. and the giants game... once against defense fcked it up for us and the idea to not use deangelo to run the ball in overtime. Cards game... another bye week another time delhomo plays like complete crap... but it was more to do with the abandonment of the run so early more than it had to do with his INT's in the red zone he is known very well not to do.

Even if Peppers leaves, Haynesworth won't be here. Neither will Asomugha. I think Fox wants solid lunch pail guys no one has given enough credit to and to build through the draft. That way we aren't a spark, one and done. We become a franchise that can be consistant.
so....do with the Dline what we did with the Oline last year?

makes sense. i think i have been saying that for some time. build on what we have. bring in players who have something to prove and give them an opportunity to do it.

Two good points in this thread.

Thunderraiden - You have echoed many of my feelings on the coaches, depth problems and potential useage of player personal. I too feel Brayton should be our A Wallace and that Lewis should move back to his rotational role, even if it is for the remainder of his contract. Would Fox move these vets into rotational roles? Does he think that Lewis and Kemo are fine as starters and that it is the depth that needs to improve? Personally I would love to see Haynesworth with Kemo and Lewis splitting time at the other Dt position depending on situations. Haynesworth will actually be cheaper than Peppers would have been. So we would be saving a bit of money. Although that bit we did save will be used by Gross' agent, so we would be in trouble cap wise in a few years...

...which brings me to xclown. You are bang on I think. The model Richardson wanted. It's to build through the draft as well as play physical D and run the ball. Get the guys in the system for several years and have few contracts that prevent as many of these draftees from sticking on te team. Stash them everywhere. 'Got an injury? IR for you! That way as soon as a vet reaches crunch time in his career, or is a distraction they can keep the system the same and simply promote from within. Free agent pick ups will be rare and if they happen they will certainly be in the vein of what we did with our OL last year. Hungry vets who have something to prove. High character vets who excel at nurturing younger players. That way they compliment the no nonsense attitude. you might actually find the successful players will stay at the team for less money because of the model of consistent success.

We also will find the cap ten times easier to manage so that when we a franchise QB lands at our feet...

Am I missing something? Wasn't Haynesworth's only "character issue" a few years back with the head stepping incident?

If so, then why are you all jumping his balls on that one incident when it's clear he hasn't caused any other "Character issues" since then?

If you can't get over that, then how the hell can you get over Smitty? Seems like a double standard to me..

Our defense needs a few more pieces and we will fine. Our offense is loaded so know we can concentrate on the defense. If we don't try and blow things up every year, we don't have to make huge upgrades or changes each year. Our offense should be set and good for some time and it took a few good choices and one year to make the changes. We could do the same thing on defense next year. Like some other teams we can have good talent on both sides of the ball. Many of our best players like Williams, Stewart, Otah, Beason, Godfrey are all on their rookie contracts and cheap.
