I like this theory about the alt reality.

So, in last night's episode, Eloise says that Desmond lives in a place where he has Widmore’s respect, which is what he’s always wanted. But Desmond denies this and says, 'how do you know what I always wanted?' I think the Sideways world shows Smokey's promises to the castaways fulfilled. He promises them that they could have various things on the Island (Nadia for Sayid, Jin for Sun, Leadership for Ben), and what these characters choose on the Island effects the sideways world (Sayid chooses to go with Smokey, gets Nadia in the ALT. Sun chooses not to go with Smokey, loses Jin in the ALT. Ben chooses not to go with Smokey, doesn't get the leadership at the school, but does redeem himself with Alex). So what we're seeing in the Sideways world is the fulfillment of Smokey's promises if the Survivors choose to go with him. The sideways world is what happens if Smokey gets off the Island--if he becomes uncorked. If he gets to fulfill his promises to the Survivors and this negates the Island world (it 'ceases to be').

And this is what Desmond is going to show them in the ALT: that they have a choice. They can either go with Smokey (and therefore the sideways world) or they can choose Jacob and the Island (and forgo the sideways world). This will be their final choice. Somehow, I think another electromagnetic pocket will come into play for Desmond, but I'm not sure how.

Note: Desmond's response is key: How do you know what I wanted? Meaning, the sideways world is not what the Survivors actually want, it's what Smokey thinks they want from 'scanning' them. So when they choose NOT to go with Smokey, they get their unique and more meaningful redemption, like Ben with regards to Alex. When they don't, they become 'claimed' or 'infected' like Sayid.

Thoughts?

natty, I read that theory too. From it I'm getting a feeling like in a Funhouse room of mirrors. None of it looks real but you know it all is somehow but it's all different too. Some people have been saying too that the ALT is bleeding into the real timeline on the island, example is Sun's not knowing how to speak English, Ben's decision to not follow MiB. Desmond is the only one who can remember his time in both. Some are also saying that Charles Widmore & Eloise are doing MiB's bidding and not Jacob's. Hmmm.

Well, they brought back the science element with the on-island part and Daniel's physics writing in his journal. I'm glad for that, a mythological only ending wouldn't do the show justice IMO. But they also reinforced the idea that love, in the end, saves all and sets things straight. Will it? Are we in for a Matrix-like ending? All the science foiled by a human's love & free will? Choices, choices.

I was getting a very creepy feeling from the 2 dead guys, Charlie & Daniel. Like they're not holding anything back even in the ALT because they know they die in the island time. They can be reckless. Breaking the rules?

I was left, though, with a very uneasy feeling after seeing Desmond's face and seeing his actions after his time in that cabin. He was calm but eerily so. His reaction to Sayid surprised me.

I can't wait for next week!

Wow, what an episode! The 2 timelines are starting to merge, it seems. Ironic that "Locke" tries to kill Desmond in 1 timeline and Desmond tries to kill Locke in the other. The music to the preview for the next episode lends one to think it's going to be nuts! It's good to see Hugo asserting himself, but time will tell how it works out delivering Jack and Sun (another potential candidate) to "Locke." How will Sawyer act with Jack around now? Nothing in this episode about Jun, so it'll be interesting to see how the Jun/Sun storyline goes from here as she's bound to find out that he's being held on the other island...

spoilers from the episode in my post

my favorite part of this episode was the last minute. desmond scouting out wheelie locke and ben asking a bunch of questions. then des runs locke over and he 'wakes up' just as he did when he fell out of the window.

as for the two timelines, i have no idea how they are putting them together. it is crazy to me.

Who was the kid following Locke and Desmound Brotha out in the woods?

Locke(MIB) has seen 2 kids in the woods following him I believe......my guess is one is him and the other Jacob as kids. One had blood all over him I think, not the one from this week but the last time one showed himself.
