Little difference in quarterbacking between 2010 and 2009

One win through week eight and things, for some, are looking worse for the Panthers than it did during the depths of the 2009 season.

You'll remember back to last year when Jake Delhomme had a meltdown of monumental proportions and the team seemed to be giving away games to their opponents. Same story this year, except that Delhomme is gone and the team is two wins shy of last year's record by week eight.

Statistically, there's little difference between this year's quarterbacking than last year's closing in on the midway point.

Delhomme, by week 8 2009, had five touchdowns and thirteen interceptions, netting out 1262 yards in the air. He also suffered 14 sacks and four fumbles, achieving a 3-4 record.

2010's Moore and Claussen duo has produced: six touchdowns, thirteen interceptions, netting a total of 1298 yards. The duo has suffered 21 sacks so far and lost five fumbles, achieving a 1-6 record.

Yes, the quarterbacking has looked horrible this year, but more specifically it looks like a younger mirror-image of the horrible 2009 edition. It's garbage, but the team produced more wins by this time last year with the same garbage from the QB position.

The defense is similar in performance to last year's and they are spending a similar amount of time on the field as they did then. Special teams are actually performing much better this year.

So where's the elephant in the room? Here's a hint, last year at this time our running game was one of the best in the league, with Williams and Stewart racking up some yards and touchdowns -- against eight- and nine- man fronts. The duo even went on to set a record for combined yards last year.

It's the guys throwing the blocks for Double Trouble that are making the difference. Carolina lost the roadgraders of Vincent and Otah (folks, he won't be coming back now) and the line lost it's mean streak. Mack Bernie and The Dude are big lugs, but neither of them are the (to paraphrase The Fellowship of the Ring) "Oh poo! It's a Cave Troll!!!" kind of maulers that Otah and Vincent were.

Pick on Moore and Claussen all you want, but they are no better or worse than Jake was last year at this time. They are remarkably similar, hauntingly so, but they aren't the new wrinkle that has made us worse.

The difference is Jake understood what defenses were trying to do. He would audible to another play when he saw a blitz or a play was called he could tell would not work. He just forced the ball to Steve all the time. Either of the quarterbacks we have now don't reconize blitzes or coverages or anything the defense is trying to do. They don't change the play even if you and I could tell what the defense is going to do they both seem to panic and not know what is going on on the field.

Jake was not a good quarterback anymore but at least he could get us into a play that had a change to work. Neither of the guys, Matt or Jimmy, seem to be able to do that now.

as you said, we had a great running game. All the QB had to do was effectively get out of the way. When Moore stepped in to the spotlight, he didn't have to carry the team.

This year, our quarterback is being asked to carry the team.

The reason the offense was ineffective with Clausen is that he wasn't ready to carry a team yet. He can manage a game, but that's... well, yeah... and when you don't have a decent run game to manage, all he's doing is losing games.

The reason the offense is ineffective with Moore is that while he can make the plays, he also turns the ball over. He can score, but he can also lead to opponents scores... which can be killer when we have no run game to keep our D fresh.

Ultimately, no matter who is at QB, I don't know why our gameplan is always long-developing pass plays with the same run-up-the-middle. Let's get the ball to our playmakers in space... maybe Moore can't sell a screen, but at least he can throw slants.

Why not use the fact defenses are anticipating our actions to our advantage?

I don't like Jake, Matt, or Jimmy, but you must remember Jake turned the ball over 5 times in the season opener against the Eagles, so thats a little misleading.

And Matt had four turnovers in the first game this year.

Like I said, quarterback statistics for the two seasons are remarkably similar.

Edit to add: Remarkably atrocious, not just remarkably similar.

But Matt wasn't playin from behind from the first quarter on like Jake was. Plus you got two different QB's, both suck, but the OC is going to give the rookie a different game plan than Matt. Matt could have won the game if he wasn't color blind.
