What to do list for an offense?

Ok, I want everyone view on this. We probably had the best offense in a decade or so but we choked in playoffs... What changes would you make if you were a GM?

-We got a good OC (Your view)

-We have a great offensive line but we have a chance of losing Gross (What would you do? resign Gross or Draft/FA LT?)

-We got a great running game (Most would agree. Do we give DW a new contract?) What about FB spotion?

-What should we do with our WR? Will Smith, Mushin, Hacket, and Jarrett cut it?

-Would you resign King, start Rosario?

-And of course... What should we do about a QB psoition?

My take:

-Keep Davidson, he did well in his 2nd year.

-Keep Gross (hes more important than peppers). Franchise him if needed.

-Give DW a new contract extension and lock him up for next 6 years. Make Hoover retire and cut Goings. Draft a young FB somewhere in 5th or 6th round. Ex: Will Taufoou.

-Cut Hackett and add cheaper, younger WR like Hank Baskett to be our #4. WR tend to have a hughe drop-off in productions when they get old... Mushin is 35. Dont be suprised if he becomes #3 next season.

-Do not resign King nor make Rosario a starter... King is not a playmaker and Rosario is one trick poney. The Panthers need to look else where... Maybe even give a shot to L.J. Smith who sucked this season.

-Delhomme will still be our starting QB but we need to pressure his ass. We need a back up that can challenge Delhomme... Sign someone like Byron Leftwich.

Not run against 9 - 10 man fronts

Spread the ball around more to different WR's

Be more creative in getting the ball to Smith, Williams (screens, reverses, etc)

Protect the ball.

Go for 6 on every possession.

As for personnel- start King and Barnidge, that kid is going to be good, IMO.

That's it for me.

OC is fine, hope he learned a lesson.

- At this point Gross is more important than Pep, he must be kept.

- All the RB's are fine, even Hoov for another season or so.

- WR-> Smith, Moose, Hackett, Robinson, Draft Pick/Carter

- Midround tender for King, rest of fine Barnbridge/Rosaio

- Qb is gonna stay the same. maybe late round pick, I would love to draft Graham harrel tho for backup competition.

I pretty much agree with everything you said except the stuff in bold.

Hopefully we won't need to franchise Gross because we are gonna franchise Pep and sign Gross to a long-term deal.

Cutting Hoov would be a huge mistake. You don't mess with a good running game and Hoov was a very good blocker when he was in...he stays.

Signing Byron Leftwich is a bad idea. What would he do?? Sit on the bench and take up a roster spot? The guy is not a good QB...as was seen with him being benched and having his spot taken by his backup. If we don't do anything about the QB spot then its Delhomme, Moore, and McCown going into next season.

Ideally we will see a QB in the later rounds that we can take a shot at...a guy like Cullen Harper or Curtis Painter.

At the WR position...I don't see this getting an upgrade this year. We still have Steve, Moose, and a ton of unknowns (Jarrett and Robinson for example).

Ultimately this offseason is going to be about defense. Our shakiest unit this year as the D and as much as we think it was because of coaching...apparently the FO doesn't see it the same way (evidenced by Turdo getting an extension). Therefore I expect nearly every pick/offseason addition this year to be defense.

I know Jake helped us go 12-4 but the signs that he might struggle against Arizona were there all season... after a number of very shady performances. I'm not saying that we throw Jake to the wolves, but at the same time, I think any QB in a system like Carolina where nobody challenges you, sits you, punishes you, and nobody behind you is worth a damn... doesn't benefit the QB himself, the coach, or the team.

Our offense proved that it can play this year. I would resign Gross (especially if Peppers leaves, money can't be an excuse) and just let them keep on doing what their doing. I would invest in a quality backup (a QB - veteran or rookie - who Fox isn't afraid to toss in the game ---HE HAS TO BE WILLING TO SIT JAKE AT TIMES.) and maybe a WR, since Jarrett's future is up in the air, Hatchett was invisible, and Muhammad looks good but isn't a spring chicken.

Overall I like the talent on our offense... coaching has something to be said. Davidson was doing good all year until he got to the playoffs and had the genius idea to stop running the ball. That didn't work. Then again, at least Jeff was solid all year... compared to Turogocrap who had this defense firing on all cylinders until the bye week. uhh

Ok first off I like your post this is one of the best posts so far since it's not about Peppers, but back to your topic.

Offensive Coordinator- I agree with you 100% Jeff Davidson needs to say. Foxy needs Davidson. He is a great Offensive Coordinator

Offensive Line- I agree with you somewhat on the subject of our offensive line, however even if we keep Jordan Gross I would still like the Panthers to pick up another lineman in the draft such as Greg Isdaner from WVU, Ryan Stanchek from WVU, Selvish Capers from WVU, Garrett Reynolds from UNC, Jaimie Thomas from Maryland, Curtis Crouch from North Carolina State, Calvin Darity from North Carolina, Cliff Ramsey from Boston College, Xavier Shannon from Miami, and Ryan Shuman from Virginia Tech. You know a guy that will be drafted between the 5th-7th rounds that can be a good back up.

Running Back Situation- Well Deangelo Williams already said he would not sign a new contract until his two years are up. It doesn't mean anything bad, he just wants to get all the money he can when these two years are up, but he will be a Panther. As for the full back position I like it the way it is. Considering they did sign Nehemiah Broughton that just tells you that the Panthers do not care much about the fullback positon.

Wide Receiver Situation- I like our wide receiver situation, I would like the Panthers to keep all of there receivers and grab one in the draft such as Hakeem Nicks from UNC, Brandon Tate from UNC, Manuel Johnson from Oklahoma, Brooks Foster from UNC, Juaquin Iglesias, from Oklahoma, or try out QB/WR Pat White from WVU. Pat White could end up being a Antwaan Randal El or Kordell Stewart type of player.

Tight End Situation- I like Rosario but he is inconsistent. I praised him for making that amazing catch verse the Chargers, but we didn't really her from him since then. I would like the Panthers to resign King, promote Barnidge, and make Rosario the third string tight end.

Quarterback Situation- The quarterback situation is simple FINALLY DRAFT A QUARTERBACK. I would like the Panthers to take a look at Pat White from WVU, Chase Daniels from Missouri, Brian Johnson from Utah, John Parker Wilson form Alabama, Cullen Harper from Clemson, Graham Harrell from Texas Tech, and Josh Freeman from Kansas State. I wish the Panthers would just give some of these guys a look.

Alright I am Done

Not much to do on this side of the ball

*Do not even know why we would even consider firing Davidson. In my mind that is not even worth considering

*Restructure and extend Delhomme to give him confidence and help our cap situation. Anyone out there is not even as good as McCown...

*I would like to see maybe one or two linemen in the draft to be groomed as a replacement for Vincent and we definately need a backup for Gross.

*Sign Gross to as big deal as he demands because frankly we do not have too much time to negotiate and he proved he is better than anyone else we could get at LT

*Do nothing with the running backs, maybe get a heir apparent to Hoover

*If we are sticking with the same concept philosophy wise then there is no need for Hackett. I think he could be a quality receiver for us, but fact is we do not utilize him and it seems crazy for both parties to keep someone we hardly ever use.

*Te is the only potentially tricky bit. Obviously tender King. Possibly with a higher tender so if someone does like him we get more than the 5th we used on him. If he goes we need a starter.

I think what happens between now and after the draft will be a good indication on what will happen to the passing game. If we keep Hackett and bolster our TEs or even WRs before camp then you know we will be looking at spreading the ball around more. If we cut Hackett and just bring in blocking backs and TEs then we know its power runing and deep threat passing.

There will only be changes if they want more out the passing game.

Keep Gross, although I'd like to see the Panthers draft a good guard.

We're alright with the QB's we have on the roster.

Hoover has had his best season as a FB. Keep him another year.

Our running backs are fine under their current contracts.

I don't see us bringing in any other receivers.

King will prolly be back.

Davidson needs to remember what got us to the playoffs.

keep gross of course.

lose hackett, we have good choices on the roster already. give jarrett more opportunities. get robinson going. find room for jason carter. those young three guys have the potential to be a great group of WRs for us into the future.

no way should we push hoover out the door. find a eventual replacement for him, yes, but he still has a lot to offer us and did great helping the running game.

have the new QB coach work with jake and the other Qbs all offseason and get jake working with all the WRs to help him learn to look for all of them. fine tune his throwing. he is still learning how to use his new arm and with some tweaking he will be able to get some things under control. sounds like we have the right QB coach to get that done.

other than that, we don't really need to do much. offense is not the problem that defense is.

Something I haven't seen any post about is Hangartner. He is a UNFA this offseason. Not resigning him would kill this offensive line. Vincient took two years to recover the last time he had this same injury, not to mention that Hangartner can step in and be a starter when needed at guard or center. My concern is that Hangartner wants to be a starter. If he leaves or if the Panthers sign him by giving him the starting job at RG, the Panthers are going to need depth on the line that they lose with Hangartner. As we saw with injuries this season to Kalil, Vincent, Wharton and Otah, having Hangartner, who filled in for three of those starters, is very important.

    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
    • The lack of production is especially surprising given how much effort the team put into coaxing the best from him.  In just six short years he’s had the opportunity to work with 3 different GMs, 7 different head coaches and 10 different starting quarterbacks.  There’s literally no excuse to be made that one of those combos didn’t work.  It might be time to look withIAN.
