Williams move on after contract up?

Don't look for the Panthers to tinker with the final two years on DeAngelo Williams' contract, even after his 1,515-yard, 20-touchdown performance this season.

It appears both sides are content to move forward under the current deal, which expires after the 2010 season. Williams has the chance to earn up to $2.5million in escalators in the final year of the deal. His base salary for next season is $645,000, with at least $835,000 in incentives.

Why else would he be content with his current deal? He might just want the next two seasons to try and drive his value up even more. However, there is also the possibility that he'll want to go somewhere else to get more carries. He also still might be a little sore that Fox and co. didn't believe in him, despite clearly outplaying Foster.

Being the team player that he is, Williams would probably never say any of those things, even if he did think them. Of course, this is all speculation on my part. Oh, and yes, I know it's probably way too early to be worrying about this but I'm a bored insomniac.

Perhaps that's true. But I can't say he is sore for not starting over Foster last year. One of the knocks on him for not starting was he needed to get better at blocking. The coaching staff gave him their confidence by having him start this year and getting rid of Foster, when they could have kept Foster.

With the way he handled us drafting Stewart and the great attitude he had throughout the season, I can't agree that he's sore for not getting a great amount of carries. He put up great numbers this season. He wasn't over used and drained as the season ended solely because of that.

With the number of teams using 2 RB's more frequently than in the past, it's a trend that will most likely continue, regardless of what team he is on.

or.....maybe he's just content (which is what i gather is the most likely thing from what i know of him).

quit trying to find more reasons to stress. this offseason has enough troubles of its own without people getting paranoid over imaginary threats.

concentrate on the crap that we have going on now. williams isn't any more of a worry than smith is. williams will be around.

You're probably right. He doesn't seem like the type to hold grudges. At least not from what we know about him anyway. However, a competitive RB might not be able to help themselves from wondering what they could do if carrying a full load like Peterson or Turner. After all, those are the type of RBs that get the most respect.

Maybe he knows the team needs the money (cap room) this year to bring extra talent into the organization. Remember, the Panthers were only 2 games away from the Super Bowl last year. Most players know that it would not take much to make another run and no one wants to cripple the team.

He has never done that and it doesn't seem like he particularly wants to. he isn't an introvert like some of those others and he doesn't have anything to prove. he just want to play and win. i really think he wants to share the duties with someone.

anyway, he didn't really turn things up until this past offseason after he had that talk with vinny. had he started carrying a heavier load or been the starter prior to this year he wouldn't have been as successful as he is now. he wasn't held back for any other reason than he just wasn't ready for that role. he would have been better than foster, imo, but he wasn't ready to be the man yet either.

i just don't see any reason to hold a grudge.

that got me thinking about dwayne jarrett as well. he has been held back quite a bit but if you listen to him he really has been using that time to improve. it took him a long time to figure it out but i think that we are going to have a star in him for a long time. next year he should start seeing a lot more attention or at least playing time.

To be frank, having two RBs of their caliber is quite the task no matter their personality. Just take a look at Jamal Lewis/Priest Holmes (BAL), Corey Dillon/Rudi J (CIN), Priest Holmes/LJ (KC), and even the upcoming (NYG) Bradshaw/Jacobs/Ward situation. That's just off the top of my head. There maybe a larger age discrepancy in some cases, but it is just hard to do. I would wait another two years till Dlo's contract nears its end and then see how both have fared and who is better for the team.

He's only had one good year, lets wait and see before we give him a monster contract. Not only that but Stewart very quietly had a pretty damn good rookie season and by as early as 09 I can see him making some noise in regards to pushing for the start. By the time Williams is ready to leave Stewart will still have 2-3 years on his deal and we can likely let him walk rather than have two massive price tags and we'll be right to draft / sign a change of pace guy.
