Williams move on after contract up?

Steve Smith/Deangelo = Offense. Sign him no matter what it takes as soon as he is ready and don't worry about it anymore. Our front office tried to do that with Julius but he wants out. I think they will do the same with DWill as they did with Steve Smith. Sign them before the bitching starts. Believe in the front office. Believe.

Think of this from the Panthers point of view. They're close to the cap already, they need to re-sign Gross, and they need to go shopping for defensive line help. Why would they re-negotiate a contract NOW with a player who's happy where he is and who's getting a 2.5 million bonus anyway? They can address his contract next year and it will all be good.

Now think of it from the agent's point of view. If the Panthers renegotiate now, he gets a nice commission but his client is locked up for four or five more years. The current collective bargaining agreement expires soon, and there will be no salary cap next year. Why on earth would he want a decent payday today when he could get a huge one next year?

Now think of it from the overreactive fan's point of view. The fact that Williams isn't getting a new contract now is further evidence that Trgovac is incompetent, and I can write a really long post detailing why if you want. Oh, and no wonder Pep wants to leave.

If you look at how the Panthers used Williams and Stewart this season they are really making an effort to allow both backs to get carries but also allow both backs to get rest. The two back system that is often refered to as more of a design to allow "change of pace" or having different running styles on different downs and distances.

What I think Carolina might be doing is trying to run a typical running style but with two backs. Unlike what other two-back system teams do with having their 2nd back come in on 2nd or 3rd down Carolina often has one back run an entire posession. And unlike other teams, Williams and Stewart are very similar in running style. There are differences between the two but compared to other two-back teams like the Giants with Jacobs and Ward or the Titans with White and Johnson the differences are very subtle in Carolina.

This style and new design of a two-back system was very successful but what it does is calls for two starting caliber backs. The hope would be that Williams and Stewart sees that this system not only is successful but can also extend a running back's career considerably and that extended career is worth more than a big FA payday. Just look at Tomlinson for proof of a great back who's career can end quickly after being the sole option in the running game.

If I was Williams, I won't sign an extention this early. And I might even wait until my rookie contract expired to get the biggest payday possible. But it would be with the Panthers as long as they continue to run this type of system.
