urinary tract infections...

i had a really fricken bad one last spring...and it moved to my kidneys too...the concentrated cranberry pills had me fixed in like 2 days.

I had a good amount of em but the worst one put me in the hospital. Had moved from my bladder to my kidneys. I couldnt lift my arms b/c I was in so much pain. It was horrible. Had to go get Xrays after it was healed to see if it had scarred my kidneys. Not fun. Also had to drive down to the beach for court with my dad while it was still healing.

We had to stop like every 30 minutes so I could pee, the bumps in the car hurt more than anything ever and then in the hotel I had to sleep on my stomach the whole time b/c it hurt so bad. I felt so bad for my dad ugh it was horrible.

nasty stuff. I'm pretty sure my wife came down with one yesterday. we're in Thailand at the moment, so it's been a little hairy... twelve hour bus rides aren't very conducive to healing from the things. between her being a nurse and my Thai being just passable, we were able to locate some antibiotics, so hopefully that'll help.

she's pretty miserable right now, sleeping in the hotel room... any prayers from pray-ers would be appreciated as I'm really worried about her, and any advice would be great too.

My heart and prayers go out to her. I had one a couple of months ago. (Being a wheelchair you are real susceptible to them!) I take 2 Cranberry capsules a day and drink at least a glass of juice a day to try and ward them off.

Pass along 2 pieces of advice. (She probably doesn't need it, being a nurse.)

1) Tell her to never wear silk panties. Even those with the cotton crotch can trap moisture. Cotton panties may not look cool and no, you don't have to wear the "Granny Panties" but do a much better job at moisture control. "Boy shorts" are good looking on a woman. Trust me, I used to be a Personal Trainer to "Soccer Moms". It's OK to wear silk panties out on the town, but never all day all week long. Better yet, go without whenever possible.

2) Find her some regular Alka Seltzer. The ingredients in regular, not the lemon or cold Alka Seltzer will help clear up a Bladder Infection. (I don't know if it's the aspirin or the baking soda that does it.)

Cranberry juice won't cure it, It helps prevent it, I'm not a quack even though I did go to school there for 4 years!

It will help keep her flushed out. Avoid any fruit juice high in acid, Lemons for instance.

Last month when I had one, my doctor prescribed just 5 amoxicillin pills ($40/pill more costly then Viagra!) of antibiotics.

Philly B, have her drink a glass of water with Baking Soda (Arm & Hammer)1/2 a T-spoon mixed in. Might be better than the Alka Seltzer since it's higher conscentration!

How to Cure a UTI Without Antibiotics

Instructions

  1. 1
Clean up your diet. Various foods and beverages can irritate a UTI and should be avoided. These include chocolate, cheese, spicy foods, soda and any other beverages that have a fizz to them. Artificial sweeteners should also be avoided.
  2. 2
Get rid of bad habits. Some lifestyle habits can contribute to a UTI and they should be stopped or avoided. These include drinking alcohol, smoking and drinking caffeinated beverages.
  3. 3
Take Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an antioxidant that can help keep bacterial growth in check. You can get Vitamin C in supplement form or find it naturally in citrus fruits, tomatoes, cauliflower, kiwis and red peppers.
  4. 4
Drink some juice. Cranberry and blueberry juice have substances in them called proanthocyanidins, which help eliminate and prevent buildup of bacteria on the urinary tract walls. You can drink these juices by themselves or mix them with some apple juice if they are too tart.
  5. 5
Mix up some oils. Aromatherapy is an alternative approach that can help treat the symptoms of a urinary tract infection. Mix together some bergamot, juniper, fennel, frankincense and sandalwood. You can then massage it into your skin at the location of your bladder or put it into bath water and soak.
  6. 6
Drink water with baking soda. Water by itself helps flush the body of toxins, which makes it beneficial to a urinary tract infection. Adding baking soda can raise the acid/base of the urine to help keep the urine acidic. Add 1/2 tsp. of baking soda to 8 oz. of water and then drink.

man you guys (and girls) are awesome. thanks a lot for the advice. we managed to get over to a pharmacy yesterday and found the right type of antibiotics for pretty cheap (thankfully she's a nurse and knew exactly what to look for.) she took some last night and loaded up on juices (i couldn't find any cranberry unfortunately, it doesn't really sell in Thailand apparently.)

twelve hours and several pills later she's feeling 1000% better... the antibiotics seem to be doing the trick. thanks again!
