School buses doing 45mph in a 65mph

Am I the only person bothered by this? How is having a vehicle doing 20mph below the speed limit on a highway safe? I don't know how many times I have almost got into a wreck having cars cut me off trying to get around these buses. This also creates unneeded traffic congestions. Something needs to be done about this.

And please spare me the "I don't care about the safety of children" argument. Going 20mph below the posted speed limit isn't safe for anyone.

I know exactly what you are talking about. I-485 rush hour. It is a major problem and backs up traffic like crazy. It defeats the purpose for having the interstate. Start a petition and I'll sign it.

I might agree with school buses staying off Interstates (although in some cases that would prove difficult), but there is no way I would ever agree with a school bus being allowed to go that fast. Its a fact, that the higher your rate of speed, the greater the chance that an accident will be lethal.

You must have kids or dont live in Charlotte. The problem is the buses are empty. They run the route for the kids and then take the interstate back with an empty bus at 45. Thats what f*cks up all the other drivers.

The buses I see on 485 are completely empty. Yet they still go 45mph.

And if you don't want the buses going that fast, then they shouldn't be on a highway.

Where I live is irrelevant because Charlotte doesn't have some unique claim on traffic jams caused by school buses. I have lived in cities larger than Charlotte, and they usually have the same complaints. And I drive my kid to school. And when there is a bus on the road, I just bite the bullet, keep calm and stay behind it until I can pass safely.

Buses are made so they can't go above a certain speed. Thats the way it is, the way it will be for the foreseeable future, and the way it should be. To suggest that a bus full of 7 and 8 year old kids should be capable of doing 65 mph is setting the scene for an increased number of crashes that kill multiple kids.

Empty buses. Empty buses. Empty buses. Did I mention the buses are empty.

Okay, if you don't want a bus going 65mph, then keep them off the highway. That's all I'm asking. If a bus can't go faster than 45mph then they don't belong on a highway. Maybe the bus drivers need to "bite the bullet" and take the long way home.
