3 Degrees of Separation... Or Something Like That: Alex Smith, David Carr, Troy Smith

Just found this interesting, it's not directly related to us, but is a result of our actions lol...

Troy Smith, who has yet to take a first-team practice snap with the 49ers, will be the team's starting quarterback Sunday against the Denver Broncos, coach Mike Singletary announced Wednesday morning.

Alex Smith is expected to miss 2 to 3 weeks with a left shoulder separation, Singletary said. David Carr has been demoted after struggling against the Carolina Panthers after taking over for Alex Smith. Carr completed 5 of 13 passes for 67 yards and a critical interception in the 49ers' 23-20 loss to the Panthers.

WOW. Apparently not being able to pass for the rest of the game after Alex Smith went out will do that to you.

So, our connection is obviously - CJ knocked Alex Smith out for a couple weeks. Carr was picked up by the Niners after failing here, failing in New York, and then returned here to fail again Sunday, and Troy Smith was a guy a lot of the members of this board liked as an option to bring in and compete to start or at least as the vet backup.

I'm actually pulling for the Niners in their game this week and I like them usually against whoever they're playing as long as it doesn't interfere with our well being. I definitely think if Troy has got their offense down he's gonna surprise people, and it wouldn't surprise me if he ends up taking the starting spot. All because of us.:bigear:

Yeah I really don't understand why Smith wasn't in contention with the starting job all along. I mean, the guy was in position to start for the Ravens before getting sick and losing the job to Flacco. We all know what David Carr can and can't do, Smith still has the potential to be a good QB.

Troy Smith probably is better than Carr, but I don't see any evidence he is better than Alex Smith. Only 89 career passes in 3+ years of playing time.

He was a frontrunner for the starter position in Baltimore before he got sick in 2008, at which point Flacco started. Of course, Flacco played lights-out from the beginning, so Baltimore rightly kept him as the starter.

I think the jury's still out on Troy Smith, but I think we already know what kind of player Alex Smith is. Yes, many maintain that he's learning and improving, and that may be so, but I really don't see him as the future of that franchise.

If it was me, I would have traded for him and instead of drafting Clausen drafted a WR in the 2nd. I think he has a lot of potential and yes he has had a limited number of attempts but he also has had a limited number of opportunities. Went from a 5th round rookie one year to the front runner for the starter position the next. Then he gets sick and Flacco (1st round 6'5" rockect armed passer) comes in and the rest is history.

He looks good in preseason (didn't see any from this past preseason) and whatever mop-up/trick play opportunities he has gotten in the regular season. He has the talent and I believe this guy could be special on the right team.
