Best Horror Genre Movies

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Since I'm thoroughly immersed in AMC's "Fear Fest" this week, as well as watching the annual "100 Scariest Movie Moments" on You Tube, I thought I'd ask for opinions on the best movies that cover a particular genre or character type.

So what, in your opinion is the...

- Best Vampire Movie

- Best Werewolf Movie

- Best Zombie Movie

- Best Ghost Movie

- Best Slasher Movie

- Best Evil Child (or Children) Movie

Edit: Added

- Best Demon Movie

- Best Monster Movie

- Best Serial Killer Movie

Best Vampire Movie John Carpenter's

Best Werewolf Movie None

Best Zombie Movie None

Best Ghost Movie None

Best Slasher Movie Halloween i guess

Best Evil Child (or Children) Movie None

If you can't tell i don't really like horror films :D

I actually like Carpenter's "Vampires" pretty well, but I like a lot of Carpenter's work (outside of "Ghosts of mars" and "Escape from L.A.).

My personal favorites in the genres listed...

- Vampire Movie: "Salem's Lot" (probably would have been "30 Days Of Night" if it had a better ending)

- Werewolf Movie: "The Howling" (the first movie that made werewolves cold-blooded killers rather than sad, tortured souls)

- Zombie Movie: "Dawn of the Dead" (the new version, though Romero fans will accuse me of blasphemy; "28 Days Later" is good too)

- Ghost Movie: "The Grudge" (my ex-wife was shaking by the time this movie was over)

- Slasher Movie: Halloween (original version; not a fan of the remakes; nobody should ever give Rob Zombie money to make a movie, ever again)

- Evil Child (or Children) Movie: "The Ring" (more obvious choices would be "The Omen" or "Village of the Damned", but this one's my choice)

And a few others worst mentioning...

- Best Demon Movie: "Prince of Darkness" ("The Exorcist" is very overrated; "Rosemary's Baby" is good, but kind of dated)

- Best Monster Movie: "Alien" ("The Thing" is a good choice here too)

- Best Serial Killer Movie: "Psycho" (likely most will say "Silence of the Lambs" but I gotta go with Hitchcock)

Thought about including "natural terror" as a category, but who - outside of maybe Jangler, given his current avatar - would pick anything besides "Jaws"?

Best Vampire Movie: none

Best Werewolf Movie: Silver Bullet (call me cheesy, but this one got to me as a kid)

Best Zombie Movie: Dawn of the Dead (the newer one)

Best Ghost Movie: Paranormal Activity (even though I'm not really a fan, they did a lot with a limited budget)

Best Evil Child (or Children) Movie: The Omen (original)

Best Slasher Movie: they are all "meh" to me... If I had to pick one, it'd be one of the Nightmare on Elm St. episodes...

Best Demon Movie: I was a fan of the Exorcist stuff, but I think I'll go with Fallen here... You can't stop Azazel...

Best Monster Movie: meh... not really a fan of these but I'll go with Predator or The Mist here... The Mist is a really underrated movie...

Best Serial Killer Movie: I'd go with the Saw franchise here... He doesn't fit the general archetype here, but that sums up what he does...

another genre:

Best WTF? Horror Movie: Hellraiser

I will have to think for awhile for some others, but for me the best werewolf movie is "An American werewolf in London"

Slasher: Halloween 1 and 2. I did like the remake of Halloween, but part two sucked, I never even finished watching it.

Evil Child: The Omen

Vampire: The original Dracula and Nosferatu

Monster: Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein (the better of the two) and Young Frankenstein

Phantasm, I guess that would be a demon movie...

I got rid of my evil rabbit...:)

Both of those are huge wins. I too watch them every year. Thank God for AMC bringing scary movies back to October!

Best Vampire Movie: Bram Stoker's Dracula (Is it 100% loyal to the book? No. But Gary Oldman played one hell of a Count)

Best Werewolf Movie: An American Werewolf in London

Best Zombie Movie: Dawn of the Dead Remake (Fast zombies was the best thing to happen to the zombie genre since Geroge Romero)

Best Ghost Movie: Poltergeist

Best Slasher Movie: A Nightmare on Elm Street

Best Evil Child (or Children) Movie: The Omen

May I humbly submit

Best Monster Movie: Jurrasic Park

Best Splatter Movie: Hostel

I pretty much don't like horror movies. They tend to be either too gory to be anything but stupid as the focus seems to be on the gore. Or terribly acted. Or terribly predictable with underdeveloped characters....

But you asked so I'll try.

Vampire- I enjoyed the TV series "Angel" very much. I know you asked for movie, but I can't think of one that didn't pretty much suck.

Werewolf- maybe an American Werewolf in London, but a pretty dry well here

Zombie- Shaun of the Dead was entertaining, and I'd like to mention a book, World War Z as being the most interesting of the group.

Ghost- wow. bleh. I watch Ghostbusters every time it is on. Makes me laugh, and I always wanted that outfit for a Halloween costume as a kid. If this counts, maybe I'd say The Sixth Sense. It was predictable but rather well developed and acted. Since then M. Night Shamalamadingdong has sucked rocks.

Slasher- none. Those movies are ghey. Unless you count Silence of the Lambs in that group. Still my favorite "scary" movie, despite people not counting it amongst scary movies.

Evil Child- Exorcist. Does that count? Another one of my faves in the genre. Overrated? You must be a horror snob! :D

The Japanese conversion flicks leave something lost in translation. They are so formulaic and goofy.
