Movies that steal ideas

Magnificent Seven = Seven Samurai

But I think that was a straight remake. I don't think they ever disguised that it was an Americanization of the Seven Samurai.

The Ringer ripped off the premise of cheating at the Special olympics from South Park.

The Whiskey Outpost seige in Starship Troopers is directly based on Zulu. But I'm not sure if that was a rip-off or an homage; because they pulled dialogue directly from Zulu in that scene as well.

Disturbia totally ripped off Rear Window; A guy trapped in his house starts spying on his neighbors and witnesses a murder. Again, I don't know, was than an homage?

I'd add that you kind of have to put "Saw" in here, but the original was so good it's hard to think of it in terms of stolen ideas.

The creator of the franchise - Leigh Wannell, also the guy chained to the bathtub in the original - has admitted that he got the idea from the climactic scene of "Mad Max".

"My uncle lives in your esophagus"

There's a story out there that the idea for "Avatar" was stolen from an old script. And it isn't the first time Cameron's been accused of idea theft.

If you look hard enough you will find similarities between most films.

That doesn't necessarily means it was a rip off, there are only so many "Entertaining" concepts that make for good movies.

Aliens, Killer Machines, Zombies, are ubiquitous concepts.

Valid, but I'm looking at more specific things than just the general genre.

Dark City, ExistenZ, 13th Floor, & The Matrix were all similar and came out around the same time, but they are each solid enough with their own storylines and subplots to not be considered rip-offs.

The futuristic dystopia, with "the one" has been done many many times. I am a huge Dark City fan, but it wasn't ripped off imo
