Movies that steal ideas

A thread about non-remake movies that steal ideas and plot points from other films.

The first one that comes to mind for me is "The Matrix". They essentially just turned "Dark City" into an action film. Of the two, Matrix made way more money, but I find Dark City to be the superior film.

A lesser example would be "The Terminator". they built a very different mythology around it, but the central idea of an unstoppable killing machine was originally done in "Westworld" with Yul Brynner (underrated film, in my opinion).

Others?

True. The "Friday the 13th" franchise stole a lot from "Halloween" as well. One of the filmmakers even admitted that the ending was essentially a ripoff of the ending to "Carrie".

Also think "Nightmare on Elm Street" took some inspiration from "Dreamscape", another movie I think is underrated.

Wonder if there are some cases where the new version is better than the original.

I loved Dark City, but it just doesn't beat the Matrix for me.

Liked the original okay. Hated the sequels.

And truthfully, Dark City isn't the only flick they stole from. A lot of their stuff was pretty derivative.

Case in point: In the scene where The Architect is telling Neo that "the One" is actually part of their program, I was waiting for him to say "Luke, I am your father".

I have a pretty low opinion of the Wachowski brothers overall. They've been sued for stealing ideas a few times. So has James Cameron.
