You're right. But we don't have any DE's right now that are "that good." Hardy will be top notch, but he's only six games into his rookie season.

This argument comes up a lot. In my opinion though, it's not time yet.

He had injury issues in college, and I'd prefer to see how he holds up physically to the rigors of an NFL season before putting him in a starting role. You don't want to wind up turning him into another Dan Morgan (i.e. great when he can get on the field, but too often not on it).

Best guess looking at who was available would be Dan Williams, Demaryius Thomas, Arrelious Benn or Jared Odrick.

Wow, you guys convinced me. Mighty Charles Johnson in all his ebony glory is definitely better than Brayton. Nevermind the fact that Johnson could never edge out Brayton for a starting spot and only got his shot once Peppers left.

He didn't have that rep when we drafted him.

You can argue whether the Panthers should have drafted him or not, but given the Panthers usual MO in the draft, it's pretty hard to believe they would have.

And in fairness, we're not the only team that downgraded Bryant on our draft board for that reason. A lot of teams take character into account when drafting, more than usual these days with Roger Goodell in charge.
