So many position coaches leaving....

Matt Foley

carolina is all about "long-term" players and coaches...

that said.. the richardsons would not allow these coaches to leave if there wasnt a bigger plan...

if he allows fox 1 more year and he fails miserably.. then what.. fire him.. and the "new" coaches that come in this year..??

no..!

more than likely.. something big is on the radar... and "long-term"

It certainly looks like a long term solution is in the works but why fire a guy who just had a 12-4 season, won a division championship and earned a first round bye in the playoffs?

well.. it has happened before... and the talent on this team got us to 12-4 ... not neccesarily the coaching...

but then again.. he could be part of the plan.. guess we wont know until later...

Ask San Diego why they did it to a 14-2 coach. Regular season doesn't mean squat if you lay an egg in the playoffs.

i'm starting to think Fox should maybe go. If he screwed with what Trgo was doing halfway through the season, it would be hard to say he wasn't responsible for the collapse after the bye

Or maybe the other teams had enough game film to find out what we were doing and we didnt adjust.

It is...interesting. Three guys already gone, all this "one-year extension" talk, etc. I'd like to see the contracts of the guys we hire...

I'll play Devil's Advocate here...we're getting the staff ready for Cower to come in with HIS own staff (choices) in 2010 and are letting guys we've known for a while get out now and find something secure.

Cowher could pick a new staff, but realistically his choices for coaches are all spread far out amonst the nation, not unlike Bill Parcells' attempt at returning in 2002. He had coaches lined up (some suggest Henning included, as well as Bill Muir and others), and when he came back in 2003, they were mostly in other jobs already.

Cowher won't be able to get "his" choices back. Guys like Mike Mularkey, Russ Grimm are on other staffs. Others like Chan Gailey, Capers, Haslett will have new ones this year, and still more like Lebeau aren't going anywhere.

The one-year contract thing isn't terribly unusual at all. Some of the staff they did allow to seek other jobs - apparently all the defensive assistants (two have left, and Lewis interviewed with a few teams this year after not being allowed last year) and Mike McCoy (left after not being allowed to interview last year). So there's some ideal that they decided who they could live without and who they couldn't. They're the ones that got one-year deals.

Flajole was a good coach. Sunseri had a mixed reputation. Oddly enough both guys were coaching away from their traditional specialty.

Here's something I wrote on them, and more notably, who I believe should replace them:

Hi Mags :seeya:

Of the choices you put in, I like Board for DL (lost track of him, didn't know he was with the Hawks) and Venturi for the LB.

Some folks are a little down on Scherer due to the Browns QBs, but as I recall Davidson didn't exactly have a ton of success in his short Browns career either.

I like Scherer. My preference would've been Bates but he decided to coordinate at the college level instead.

Others were after Bates as I recall. Tampa perhaps? Maybe Denver.

Tampa was also supposed to look at Chan Gailey and someone elsefor OC. I forget the second name. I think Linehan's been mentioned as a possible there.
