Can someone tell me what's wrong with Stewart?

The Question

We should have traded him when we had a chance.

That's a stupid comment. He is very young and amazingly talented. We just haven't seen that in the 7 carries a game, besides SF game.

Oh my god he is doomed, let's just cut are losses now... lol. Give my a f**king break, were you saying trade him the last 5 games last year when Williams went down and he rushed for more yds than williams? I don't think so. Thw whole team has struggled to do their job not just 1 person, plus we always run better towards the end of the season and I don't think that will be any different this year.

From Gantt and Cranston:

# mikecranston1

Fox says he doesn't think Jonathan Stewart's troubles are due to injuries. "I don't think his health has anything to do with it" 10 minutes ago via TweetDeck

# Darin Gantt daringantt

Fox said RB Stewart was "health enough to play," and didn't think his problems this year (3.0 per carry) were physical. 11 minutes ago via web

The OL isn't blocking well enough and Stewart is trying to do what he is supposed to do. But the holes aren't there so he tries to make a move and it hasn't been working thus far. It isn't Stewart so much as it is the opposing scheme and our blocking.

To me Stewart seems to be thinking too much when he runs. Like yesterday he cut to the outside had alot of green in front of him and only 1 defender he decided to juke inside then back out and I thought if he would have stuck with the inside juke he would have gotten past that defender than cut it to the side line. But he decided to go out and the guy tackled him. TO me he is thinking of the big play instead of doing alot of what he did last year and just hit it and go.

Whatever is wrong with Stewart it's on Stewart, not Otah or Hoover. He isn't running with conviction, he isn't showing any burst, it really looks like he's going through the motions(although I don't think that's the case).

Out of all the decent posts in this thread I had to quote yours because that signature almost gave me a semi. Kudos sir. :drool5:

I agree. This was the one play where he had potential to pickup 10-20 yds and once he cut back in he should have stayed inside. That was a bad decision on his part.

There's a lot more football left folks!

hell no we shouldn't have traded him (though I would have traded him over D-Will, but I'd rather traded Sutton over either of em!). He'll find his feet again, I just think he isn't playing like he did at the end of last season.

No RB really is.

No, you're wrong.. There were times when he had holes he just had absolutely no acceleration whatsoever.

No he's right. The O-line is playing terrible and Stewart can't build up any steam when there isn't any hole and he has defenders all over him at the LOS. Williams can move laterally well enough to get out of trouble so he's doing a little better.

It's not just the O-line guys.

Stewart DOES look a bit slow and DOES seem to avoid hits and running over people like he does. There have been some holes that he just isn't finding, for whatever reason.

Then we're missing Hoover, which is huge, no matter what people say. Otah out is huge, but we've played almost as many games without him as with it seems, and we were fine then. I guess losing guys like Vincent or whatever could hurt?

Then you have bad playcalling. We run up the middle, 95% of the time. Change it up some. Stop running RIGHT when JS comes in, do a screen or a regular pass play.

It's a combination of all these things above. DWill looks better though right now, so they should give the majority of the carries to DWill till either JS gets his rustiness clear or we get Otah back, or w/e.

Stewart has looked timid to me, which makes me wonder if he's still nursing some sort of injury that nobody is talking about (for fear it will be targeted by opponents?).

He had an outside run where he could have thrown one of those vicious stiff-arms he's become famous for (ask Ronde Barber) and he did not... he just took the contact and went down. All year it has seemed like he goes down much easier when he's tackled, like he's afraid to really initiate contact and drive through it.

Well the O line isn't helping much. Hard to be a power runner with no hole there. Like a few have mentioned, Williams can bounce outside, but he still doesn't have much to work with either with so many stacked on the line. Someone on SF D said yesterday that the whole game plan was to force us to beat them through the air, they just didn't think we could do it.

Well if that was the case, why wouldn't Fox drop him to 3rd on the chart to let him heal or something? Goodson is a very explosive guy from what we've seen, so give him a few more chances if somethings not right with Stew. I know, I know. It is what it is. /chewgum

    • I don't really like the phrase, "moral victory". I get what's meant by it, but does that mean that if you do the opposite (play poorly but win) it's an immoral victory? 🤔
    • I blame Evero because he is overrated. Vance Joseph created the defense in Denver that he took credit for. Wilks ran the ball down his throat and Darnold had a 103.8 rtg.  Last year we were decent in yards allowed, and horrible in everything else. Only reason? We kept giving up good field position.  He's had his choice of players to bring in since his scheme is so "complicated." Maybe he should stop trying to be so fancy like running Cover 4 on 3rd and 1 earlier and focus on fundamentals like tackling. These years of Eric Washington, Phil Snow, and Evero must have gotten you confused on what a real defense looked like. Go back and watch the McDermott and Wilks years- this dude is sofT.
    • I tried to make it a point in the opening post that I don't think the offense is a finished product. I think we still need more talent at WR, better play calling, catch more consistently, elimate ridiculous penalties,  and be more consistency in scoring points. I'm just saying, they look markedly better than last year imo. They have scored 20 or more in 6 games and 30 or more in 2 games. And that's particularly notable considering they only mustered 10 points and 3 points in first 2 games of this year and they got blanked on 0 points two games in a row to wrap up last season . I'd say that's a market improvement.  I'm not crowning them and saying we have a top 10 offense or anything.  I'm comparing them to themselves in recent history.
