Brentson Buckner rips Peppers on WFNZ

I did and I'm sorry I did it now.

NFL is a business and we as fans make it personal.

Most of us care alot about this team so I expect some venting. But the level of hatred I have seen directed at Peppers, in particular, and Moose a few years ago is mind boggling. Thank God Minter just retired and didn't decide to try his luck somewhere else.

Buckner is kind of a mixed bag for me. Sometimes when I listen to him he makes perfect sense. Other times he just sounds way off the mark. He's got a pretty good "football mind" but as a talent evaluator he's iffy.

Coaches used to say that Buckner would someday be a head coach in the NFL because he had such phenomenal football knowledge. So why isn't he? Knowledge isn't enough. You also have to have people skills, and it sounds like that's where he's lacking.

As to this particular discussion, he might actually be right when he talks about Peppers effort and work ethic lacking, but his comments sound tainted by a personal dislike.

In other words, he might be right, but he's overdoing it.

it isn't too late for him to one day be a coach my friend. not too late at all.

I'm with Mr. Scot on this one.

I think he sounds pretty valid, for the most part. The message he's trying to get across does hold some weight, but he also makes it pretty clear that he just plain doesn't like Julius. That's fine, but it's diluting his argument.

If Peppers was as dominant as he (or his agent) thinks he is, he'd be salivating at the possibility of being single blocked. He was shut down pretty handily many times under these circumstances.

People say Peppers demands a double team, and it frees other people up, but I'm not buying it anymore. It was true before last season, but slowly, teams are realizing that most good tackles can handle him pretty well alone.

Brenston Buckner is horrible. I think he is just a jealous SOB. I don't know how he got a job in radio the guy can barely talk. If you guys think our D-line is terrible now and we went 12-4 just wait until Pep leaves it is going to be terrible. The guy had 14.5 sacks I think the other two had maybe 6 between the two of them. Every body is bashing Pep well maybe if he had someone on the other side he could do even better. Maybe he is tired of carrying the whole line I know I would be!!

What the hell has Peppers done for the defense on Sundays? He was dominated by rookies and journeymen LT's this season....he disappears for games at a time....when he gets blocked at the point of attack, he gives up...he is a freak athlete, but is not a dominant player.

Dude. 14.5 sacks is outstanding. It is not indicative of a lazy, uninterested player. It's just not.

I have been watching football for over 30 years, and I have yet to see a player on defense who is not handled at least some of the time. Peppers is nor Superman. Reggie Whites, and Bruce Smiths are the creme of the crop in terms of NFL history, and most players are not going to reach that level. Kevin Greene is third on the list with 160 career sacks. If Peppers plays 8 more years and averages 11 sacks per year, he will catch Greene. This year he got more than that, and because he is in his prime, that level of production is realistic. If you put Julius in a 3-4 defense, he may just be a monster.

No football player, save the QB, is going to be in the play every single time. WTF? In fact, if you actually sack the QB once per game, that would ultimately be great. Some of you are acting like Pep never gets to the QB. You have to look at the pressure and problems that he makes for the opposition, even when he doesn't get a sack. Buckner, and anyone that has ever played with Pep have benefited from Pep's very presence. Moreover, I saw Pep held more this year, than any other defensive player I have ever seen, without the call.

All of this anti-Pep talk should be taken with a grain of salt. Some of you seem to under-appreciate his contribution, but when you look at the statistical and historical significance of Pep's body of work, it's obvious that he has been dominant most of the years that he has been here, notwithstanding being moved around here and there---basically being misused in many situations. Pep has been very good, and can be in the top 5 of all time if he is put into a situation where smart, focused coaches realize what they have and put Pep in situations where his potential is maximized.

The Pep is lazy crap, and takes plays off crap, is really hollow when you take Pep's overall body of work into account. That's just the truth of the matter.

Lastly, I am not saying that we can't benefit from letting Pep go, I am just saying that if we do, he will be hard to replace. It's rolling the dice, pure and simple. I would rather keep him, but this may not be in the cards. If he has to go, I am not going to crap on him as he leaves out the door because his play over the years has been overall extraordinary.

I wasn't at all mad Moose wanted to leave and get big $$...it is every player's right as a FA or as a vested veteran who was cut as he was. I would never ever EXPECT a guy to resign for less $$ due to loyalty or wanting to end their career in one uniform or whatever. I love it when it happens, but it just isn't realistic. What I didn't like, and I said so many times, was all the BSing and semi-whining he did on his way out the door.

RE: Pep-Just heard a reporter (wish I had seen his name) on First Take say that according to his conversations with some NFL personnel people, Pep's leaving could be a good thing for Carolina (his words, not mine). The guys he talked to mentioned their feelings that to give a player a huge contract when they don't feel he gives his all on every play would be counterproductive for many reasons. So, whether we the fans think he has issues or not....the fact that some NFL personnel people might think so could limit Carolina's options in a tag and trade.
