Could Matt Moore be in a similar situation as Vince Young was last season?

you can't run well if you don't have a passing game. that passing game was good enough to open up the run game. ours isn't.

oh...phil simms in '86 >>> any QB on our roster in 2011 and it isn't even close. the dude had respect in the league and had just come off a probowl year (when that actually meant something). defenses wouldn't dare pulling on him what they are pulling on our green QBs.

our QBs aren't respected. our WRs aren't respected. our run game is going to keep getting stuffed until the passing game draws people out of the box.

/my part in the derailment.

Parcells and Simms worked together 3 years before the ultimate prize in 1986. The time to start is now, the reputation starts Sunday.

Incidentally if you want to see what can be done with no passing game ck out the Steelers stats the first 4 weeks of this season.

They've run through 3 QB s alraedy and if you believe Mr. Scot they're 27th in yardage so they must suck.

Wrong.

They're 10th in points scored and went 3-1.

Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch scares no one.

We aspire to be the Steelers but have no clue how to get there.

Oh yeah, the Steelers best receiver has 17 receptions through 5 games, scary ain't it?

In the sense that most thought that Young had lost his mojo and was a complete bust but surprised many when the team was down and they turned back to Young to only began a winning streak.

Sometimes it takes someone to be benched to realize what he really has and that is motivation to prove the doubters wrong...

Btw, I am not an advocate for Moore or Clausen, I just want something to happen that will spark this team.

Won't bet on it happening but I won't be complaining if it does. If we do win on Sunday, it's more likely because the rest of the team stepped up and Moore simply did enough to move the chains and not turn the ball over.

Moore has a huge opportunity here. The bye gave him a good time imo to get some more work in, and maybe the shuffled OL will help. I really hope so.

OTA's, mini-camp, and training camp didn't give him enough time to get some work in? Four years in the league didn't give him enough time to get some work in? He was dreadful in preseason, dreadful in regular season. We are 0 for nine with two offensive touchdowns. TWO!! Including preseason. Smitty doesn't have any confidence in this team. Coach Fox has no confidence in this team. Moore sucks. He's been a back up for a reason. He's just holding a slot until Jimmy is ready. Yall have amnesia or denial. What professional quarterback throws a ball into triple coverage, the reciever has NO chance of catching it, and keeps his job. Trying to make poo happen my ass. Thats just stupid college level decision making. I'm gonna stop my rant here.

Still love ya, panthers

 okay.

i hope so. not counting on it, though.

re: the comparison between the '10 panthers and '86 giants...huge stretch.

good for them. defenses aren't playing them the way they are playing the panthers. a huge reason is that teh steelers actually complete passes. it isn't great but it's enough that teams have to respect it.

completion percentage:

steelers- 62.0 (16th)

panthers- 45.3 (32nd)

defenses don't really have to worry about the receivers catching it. it just doesn't happen all that often.

QB rating:

steelers- 86.3 (12th)

panthers- 43.6 (32nd)

fun fact: cards are 31st and have a 59.0 rating and the raiders are 30th and have a 66.4 rating.

another fun fact: last year the browns had the lowest QB rating...55.8.

still another fun fact: there hasn't been a team to finish with a QB rating lower than 50.0 since 1998.

back on track... avg. yards per reception:

steelers- 8.0 (3rd)

panthers- 5.3 (32nd)

8.0 yards per catch is a much worse threat than 5.3.

INTs

steelers- 5 (tied for 19th)

panthers- 9 (tied for first)

i'd go on but i'd only get depressed.

point is, defenses may not have a whole lot to worry from the steelers passing game but it's enough to keep them honest. defenses facing the panthers have NOTHING to worry about with regards to the passing game. it seems keeping 2 or 3 back to cover the 2 measly receivers we send out is plenty. the rest of the guys can just flood the backfield and stuff everything. our play actions or draws fool no one. everyone knows when the QB is going to throw to smith. the passing game just isn't a threat to anyone. they can focus all of their attention and resources on stuffing the run which they have done successfully.

it's time for a change but other than the names of the WRs and the QBs, we likely aren't going to be seeing any change this year. this is foxball. it is what it is.

thankfully foxball will be someone else's problem after this year.

Wow....what a refreshing feeling to find a legitimate and well discuss thread this morning.

I am hopeful that Moore relaxes and finds him mojo again. I do agree that he was pressing thing earlier in the season trying to prove that he was a legitimate starter. Benching him may be just what was needed....see results from Young and McNabb benchings the past few years.

One can only hope....because right now, that is all we have.

Hmm...I don't think you can compare the two. Vince Young had led the Titans to the playoffs on his own before and had proven over the course of a few seasons he was more than a fluke. He always seemed to provide a spark to the team and only when he seemed to be battling a bout of depression did he really struggle.

Matt Moore on the other hand has been streaky and hasn't had the success that Vince Young has had. You could say that based on record and team performance that the '09 Titans and '10 Panthers are in similar situations at this point in the season, but the '09 Titans were coming off a 13-3 season, '10 Panthers are coming off an 8-8 season. Based on that statistic, a 5 game drop in wins, the Panthers will finish 3-13. And I think that's 100% correct.

    • yeah. winter backpacking trips were the most miserable and amazing experiences. same with the coldest and snowiest hunting  experiences. i love being in it. makes for incredible memories. the worse it was, the more i ended up loving it. made the greatest memories.  i just want to get out of it afterwards.
    • I forgot about Jackson...definitely elite.  The sad part of your list is that 2 of them were 'there for the taking for the Panthers'.  Rumor has it that Hurney loved Herbert and was vetoed on trying to trade up.  And rumor has it that Frank & McCown wanted Stroud.  I believe both rumors.
    • I went on a solo elk hunt in the Flat Tops. It was awesomely miserable. LOL It was a late season hunt, I think third season and it was forecasted to snap off cold with highs in the upper thirties and lows in the single digits. fug it, I'm going anyway. They were wrong. The highs were in the low 20s and the lows were in the negative teens. I shivered so hard the first night I thought my teeth were going to break. It was the only time I've ever been legit concerned that I might be in trouble. Crawled out of my sleeping bag and got a fire started and suffered through the night bundled up next to the fire. I slept the next two nights literally wearing every stitch of clothing I'd brought with Nalgenes full of near boiling water in the bottom of my sleeping bag. That was the only way to have non-frozen water in the morning anyway. There was about a foot of snow on the ground and the melt/freeze crust was almost enough to support your weight but you'd go crashing through just as you went or make your step. It was exhausting travel and every step sounded like a rifle shot. Hunting was basically impossible. I never saw an elk in those four days, only saw 5-6 deer. LOL It was brutal but I loved it. Absolutely beautiful country that is never been to before and haven't been back since. I needed that four day complete break from society fighting for my life against the elements. I'm weird like that.
