Comparing quarterbacks

Good NFL QBs will show promise even on crappy teams.

Great NFL QBs will win despite having a bad surrounding cast

so i can assume you would've thrown aikman to side after his rookie season. i lived in dallas at the time & many wanted &thought jimmy johnson would replace him with steve walsh because of their relatiomship at the U. in fact the only game they won was with walsh at QB(which added more fuel to the fire)

I never said sit Clausen. All i am saying is he hasn't shown anything that would indicate anything other than he pretty much stinks. He has been pretty bad

You have finally found one successful QB that played as badly as Clausen is playing now.

One counterexample does not prove a theory.

and to add a little bit to aikman/walsh debate, the cowboys used the number 1 overall pick on aikman & turned around and gave up the rights to what ended being the number 1 pick in 1990 to draft walsh in the supplemental draft of 89.(and we bash hurney for trading picks)

It would be hard to judge any QB at this juncture with the offense as a whole operating as poorly as it is from front to back.

You can judge things like

-Fundamentals

- Throwing accuracy

- Football intelligence

- Quickness

- Other skills

He has had trouble with locking in on one player. He has made bad throws. he has executed poorly. He has been sloppy. He has made bad decisions.

my point is that you can't go by this season alone to determine whether clausen can play or not. we all would like to see him show anything that gives us hope. but hurney thinks the kid will be good & may be rewarded down the road(much like johnson was by going with aikman)

Jeff George maybe? Although he was up and down

since you mentioned jeff george, that's who the cowboys gave up the chance to draft with the pick they gave up for walsh. if this type of forum existed then i can just imagine how many threads would be riping the cowboys/aikman etc etc

so has there ever been a QB that showed tons of promise his first year then sucked it up after that?

I want stats on all rookie QBs, not just the good ones and recent ones.

depends how you define "promise".

I still remember commentators saying things like "And that's why the Raiders have so much faith in Jamarcus Russel!" and stupid crap like that. After his first season, some people thought he showed promise and would improve. Heh. Depends who you ask of course. :P

Derek Anderson had one great year and hasn't recaptured that magic, but he wasn't a rookie when he did it.
