Potential Head Coaches

There's guessing, and there's educated guessing.

I could theorize that Jerry Richardson's going to hire Dabo Swinney, and if anyone doubted me I could come back with "well you don't know, he might" but it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense, would it?

Based on what we've heard from people with better sources than we do, I'm saying Cowher and Gruden are not possibilities. Circumstances tell me that Frazier, Garrett, Zimmer and probably Heimerdinger are out of the picture too. Grimm, Harbaugh, McDermott and others are still in play.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here. But as the saying goes, them's the facts.

I know JR wants to go after a young hot coordinator because he wont have to pay them as much, but it seems like that he tries to penny pinch with everything. Why? I know it's a business and money is a big factor in all decisions, but come on man! It seems like a role of the dice to hire these first time head coaches. Bill is there for the taking. Does he really think Bill Cowher is not going to win?

I looked back at the Steelers HC search when they hired Tomlin and found:

The Steelers chose Mr. Tomlin after vacillating between him and Russ Grimm, the team's assistant head coach and offensive line coach. The Steelers decided not to wait for Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, the third finalist for the job, because he would not be available to be hired for another two weeks.

and this:

Knowing that JR talks with the Rooney's on a regular basis, I see him going with Grimm or Rivera. I would prefer Harbaugh but that seems less likely to me.

Out of Grimm or Rivera, I would love to see Rivera get the job just based on our strength of our team. This is no knack on Grimm but Rivera has created some stellar defenses both in Chicago and SD and if he could bring a offensive guy over from SD plus add Luck in the draft we will definitely have a better team.

Also, keep in mind that if Rivera gets the nod then that doesn't necessarily mean that Carolina will switch to a 3-4 defense as he has ran both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense. I think he could bring aggression to this defense that we haven't seen before.

Regardless of who is selected, I just hope the Panthers get the damn ball rolling ASAP after the regular season ends. If they twiddle their thumbs while all the good candidates move on, I'll be pissed. But sadly, I could see JR and company moving slow to test the waters and get the "best deal" available, especially with the lockout looming.

I don't like the situation one bit with the type of management the Panthers have.

Unfortunately I don't see Rivera making the lateral shift, someone is going to want him as a HC and I don't think it will be here.

Chargers lost today, now 2 games out in their division. Norv may be out meaning Rivera is "absorbed", not immediately like Frazier in Minny but at the end of the season.

Jim Harbaugh Future.

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby has made a pre-emptive offer to sweeten Jim Harbaugh's contract before the coach even gets offered other jobs.

"We have a proposal in front of Jim and he's indicated he plans to accept it," Bowlsby said Sunday. "He's got this year and four more on his contract. I expect that he will be our coach in the foreseeable future."

We have a proposal in front of Jim and he's indicated he plans to accept it. ... I expect that he will be our coach in the foreseeable future.

-- Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby

Bowlsby spoke Sunday after the fifth-ranked Cardinal (11-1) accepted a bid to play in the Orange Bowl against Virginia Tech on Jan. 3, a remarkable turnaround from the 1-11 team Harbaugh took over four years ago.

Harbaugh quickly made the Cardinal competitive, winning four games his first year and five the following season before getting them to a bowl with an eight-win season in 2009.

Despite losing Heisman Trophy runner-up Toby Gerhart to the NFL, Harbaugh did even better this season. The Cardinal set a school record for wins, with the only loss being a 52-31 defeat at No. 2 Oregon on Oct. 2.

"That's why this program has progressed, because guys have bought into what he's saying and what he was preaching," defensive lineman Sione Fua said. "And now we're here four years later going to a BCS game."

Harbaugh's name has been mentioned as a possible NFL coach or for higher-profile college jobs, including his alma mater of Michigan if the Wolverines decide to fire Rich Rodriguez.

Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon has said he will not make a decision on Rodriguez until after the Wolverines play in their bowl game Jan. 1.

"When you have high quality people you're going to have others coming after him," Bowlsby said. "Whether it's the NFL or another university, we have to be prepared to make pre-emptive offers and do the things it takes to put tools in place that make Jim or any other coach want to stay here. In the case of a football coach, those things tend to be a little more expensive than with some of our other coaches."

Harbaugh has said he will not talk about other jobs and is happy at Stanford.
