Potential Head Coaches

Harbaugh on The Herd @ 12:15pm est ESPN radio
same as usual said. focus is "just coach the team".

he does a great job of deflecting praise on his players. cowher was gushing over him and harbaugh said, "as a coach i'm not the guy whose out there blocking or tackling".

he also talked about luck being the perfect QB whom doesn't do things that you sit back and say, "i really wish you hadn't done that". said the thing that is lucks best attribute is that he just gets better when things get more intense.

i really do think that if he had a chance to coach luck going into the pros, he would take it. why would he not?

were there any questions about him going to the pros, Rayzor?
it was talked about by cowherd, but harbaugh just kept deflecting to his attention being only on coaching right now rather than looking ahead. i don't think he's going to tell anyone anything differently until after their bowl game. it's furstrating because i want to know, but i respect his focus on the 'here and now'.

I expected those answers, and they are good to hear actually.

Pretty sure he's leaving, but that's the part of me hoping he comes here talking.

I hope he comes here too but I also think that SanFran has a chance at him. I am rooting for the 49ers the rest of the year for that reason...to save Singletary's job!

Ever since we beat them I've been rooting for them! :D

I also root for the Bills and Bengals for draft reasons, Jaguars, Chargers, Giants for coaching reasons. I was rooting for Denver but since the owner said he'd coach there next year I'm glad I can abandon that sinking ship!

Nothing like how I root for the Panthers, just casually follow and hope they do well. The way I figure, the more teams that win and stay ahead of us, the more we can win and see development from our young players :D

RON RIVERA

Rivera2.jpg...Rivera1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Defensive Coordinator, San Diego Chargers

HISTORY: Chargers DC (2008-present) Chargers LB Coach (2007) Bears DC (2004-2006) Eagles LB Coach (1999-2003) Bears Defensive QC Coach (1997-1998)

DOB: 01/07/62 (48)

STRENGTHS: Defenses have always been aggressive. Emphasizes stripping the ball, so his units tend to force a lot of turnovers. Has studied under some great defensive minds (Lovie Smith, Jim Johnson) and was coached by Mike Ditka.

QUESTIONS: Has gotten head coaching interviews, but no job offers. Career at one point looked to be going in the wrong direction when he wound up being let go by the Bears and took a step back to be an LB coach with the Chargers.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Coached safety Chris Harris, who brought his ball stripping ways to the Panthers for three years before being traded back to his old team.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Don Johnson (not that one). Chargers defensive line coach was a co-worker with Rivera in Chicago as well. I also wonder of WR Coach Charlie Joiner would like to try his hand as an OC.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Competition, but I wonder how much there will be.

ODDS AND ENDS: Like Leslie Frazier, a member of the 85 Bears team. Like Panthers GM Marty Hurney, was a sports reporter (worked for Chicago superstation WGN for three years) before starting his career in football management/coaching. One of a very few Hispanic coaches in the NFL.

ANALYSIS: There might not be a bigger enigma among coaching candidates than Rivera. He’s been considered a potential head coach since his days in Chicago, but despite being interviewed more than once, his head coaching opportunity has never arisen. It’s been speculated that he’s a poor interview (only the people who’ve actually interviewed him could confirm that, of course). Whatever the reason, something hasn’t been there. There’s certainly the possibility of some turnover on the Chargers staff this coming season. I wonder if Leslie Frazier would bring him in as a DC if he got a head coaching job.

UPDATE (11/25): Old teammate Leslie Frazier is now head coach of the Vikings. Scenarios involving Rivera joining him there are still possible, as are those that involve Rivera joining the staff of Jim Harbaugh should he get an NFL job in Charlotte or elsewhere. A lot depends on what happens to the Chargers coaching staff this offseason, and with A J Smith in charge, that's hard to predict.

According to the NFL network Rivera is a target for Hurney and gang.
