Potential Head Coaches

Is anyone else warming up to Brian Schottenheimer? Sanchez's play has really improved this year, and their offense looks good. He will probably want to switch to a 3-4 defense though. I think he'd bring along one of the Jets Defensive assistants to coach the D

schotty jr reminds me of mckid too much.

i don't know why every offensive minded coach that works with a team that uses a 3-4 is supposed to usher in a 3-4. their offense doesn't depend on what defense they use. they get a DC to handle that kind of thing.

I don't get why people don't like Schottenheimer as a candidate. I think he could be a solid choice.

Since joining the Jets staff, he has only one season where they a offense that has ranked above #16...

Also a lot of the focus is on Sanchez but their run game is stunning... Imagine what he could do with Stewart and Goodson (if Williams isn't re-signed)

The one thing that would be a downfall is if he brings the 3-4 defense. While it may work for the Jets, I don't think the 3-4 is suited for the Panthers and I wouldn't be opposed to just keeping Meeks in tacted because the defense really hasn't been the issue with this team.

I agree about the D, I have no idea what kind of D he would want, I just threw it out there.

Schottenheimer is unlikely to get anyone from the Jets' Defense to go with him, no more likely than he is to get Bill Callahan.

And whether he would bring a Jets guy with him or not is largely irrelevant, because he'll look to hire the best guy under whatever scheme he'd choose. Is he a 3-4 guy? No idea. Strong head coaches will hire the right guy and have him run whatever he wants - Coughlin hiring Capers is a key example. Some coaches go from running one as a coordinator to running another as a head coach - Haslett was a Pittsburgh guy, who ran 4-3 in NO.

But, again it ends up being what the coach wants, and if he's hired and he wants 3-4, that's what it is. Which is a downside.

The thing about this, though, is that the guys hiring - JR, Hurney - have a say in that. People forget this all the time, that whoever is hired must be the right fit. That guy has to want to run the ball. That guy has to fit to solid criteria, not just the job opening. If they sit down and say that they want a guy who can work with Clausen, they do it. If they decide the defense is too far along as a 4-3, too good to start over, they'll hire a guy who will run a 4-3.

Specific to Schottenheimer, his ties to the 3-4 are fairly strong, given he was on staff with a now-available Wade Phillips in SD, then Mangini, then Ryan. The only guy he has strong ties within a 4-3 perspective is his uncle, Kurt, who's currently the special teams coordinator in SF and a guy that Marty was willing to lose his San Diego job over.

we change to a 3-4 say goodbye to 90% of the front 7

most notably beason/davis/anderson

Davis and Anderson are a loss, but we might have to say goodbye to one ideally, and two in more grave times. You could add Brown, who some said wouldn't have the athleticism for a 3-4 in space; Hardy, Johnson, and Brayton won't fit the 3-4. Yes, Brayton played in one. Yes, it was a bad idea.

Regardless, Beason should be here. And there's no reason we don't put a defense around him. Incidentally, we have one built around him, that needs a bigtime DT and that's about it. I like the idea of "we built this defense around our best player" a lot more than "we threw out half our defense".
