Potential Head Coaches

excellent read....rep.

excerpt...

The clashes between players and coaches in places like Minnesota and Dallas of late show that dealing with today's athlete is vastly different than it was even five or six years ago. To combat that, Harbaugh has a borderline cocky swagger (remember those call-outs of USC and Pete Carroll?) that's real and something players can identify with, an ability to lift their level of play that they can get behind, a work ethic that sets a tone and the respect that a high-profile ex-player can command.

"He's a great motivator, and young men respond to that very nicely," Snyder said. "He gets down and dirty with them. He runs sprints with them. He lifts weights with them. There's a relationship he builds with them. His standards are high, his vision is ambitious, and people want to be on that ship. They're going to be attracted to him, no matter who they are.

"He's very confident, to the point where he can sometimes be brash. But he's always looking for that edge to keep people moving forward, and if it's not there for the taking, he'll create it. I think young people respond to that. Football players are looking for that."

Put it this way: He has the fearless, devil-may-care way that Rex Ryan does, yet also has the knowledge and studious nature of a Nick Saban. Does that mean he's a combination of the two? No. It'd be foolish to make that comparison already.

But it does explain what NFL folks would see in the guy.

Then, there's his ability to command. Rich Gannon tells a story from 2003, when Harbaugh was still a quality-control coach and things were going haywire in Oakland. A star veteran stood up in the team meeting room and challenged head coach Bill Callahan on his decision-making. The players were stunned. Harbaugh bounced to his feet, told the player to sit down and authoritatively said, "You don't talk to coach like that."

The other stories Gannon tells? Those are the same Trestman offered, of a coach working around the clock and doing the work the others didn't want to do, something a lot of other ex-star quarterbacks might not be willing to do.

"He's a regular guy, and people relate to that," Gannon said. "He's approachable, but he's also fiery and he's a natural leader. He played the quarterback position, so he knows how to lead, but just as he's comfortable around the superstar, he's comfortable around the rookie free agent. And he cares about the people he works with.

"I can't say enough about him. We came into the league in the same year, and he had no problem working with me as a coach. At the time, I'd gone to Pro Bowls, I was league MVP, and he had no problem coaching me. He was great, absolutely great. Everyone respected him."

if that doesn't win you over, i'm not sure what will.

JR and hurney need to get on that.

I know everybody is on the Harbaugh wagon but I believe the Panthers best option may be Russ Grimm.

Grimm hasn't been my ideal candidate but he makes the most sense for the Panthers for several reasons:

1) JR wants to emulate the Steelers in the fact that he wants to run the ball and stop the run to force the opposing offense to pass allowing our defense to stop them.

2) Grimm has ties with Marty Hurney as someone had pointed out earlier in this thread. I think a Grimm and Hurney combo wouldn't be that bad and could build this team around young stars.

3) Grimm is a players coach, which is what JR likes. He will motivate this team and improve players.

and

4) He won't be costly.

After reviewing, I think Grimm makes the most sense for the Panthers and I think he could be a good choice for the Panthers.

cost won't be a factor.

emulating the steelers = fail. run the ball-stop the run is an antiquated way of playing ball. it won't work anymore. the league has changed. you pass to set up the run, not the other way. you have to have an aggressive passing game. surely JR knows this. i know hurney does.

harbaugh is a players coach but he's more than that. he's also a winning coach. he makes teams successful. there is nothing grimm has done to show that he can lead a team. all grimm has done is shown that he can be in the right place at the right time.

harbaugh is by far a better option. grimm might be a more likely candidate to come here, but he isn't the best.

JR and hurney need to get on that.

Here's an offseason for ya...

- A new collective bargaining agreement is reached, ending the threat of a 2011 lockout.

- John Fox and the Panthers part ways after a 1-15 season.

- Their record gives the Panthers the number one overall pick in the draft.

- The Panthers replace John Fox by hiring Jim Harbaugh as their next head coach.

- The Bengals decline to make an offer to Marvin Lewis and he and his staff are allowed to walk.

- Harbaugh hires Mike Zimmer to be his Defensive Coordinator and promises him complete freedom to run the defense as he sees fit.

- Zimmer retains defensive line coach Brian Baker and Linebacker Coach Richard Smith.

- Fox goes to the Cowboys but wants his own staff, so the current assistants are let go.

- With Zimmer's help, the Panthers manage to snag former Cowboy assistants Hudson Houck (OL) and Dave Campo (DBs).

- Now having money to spend, the Panthers are able to sign DeAngelo Williams, Jon Brason, Ryan Kalil and others to new contracts prior to free agency.

- In free agency, the Panthers sign Kyle Orton, a veteran receiver and a wide body defensive tackle.

- With the #1 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Panthers select Andrew luck, quarterback from Stanford.

Would you then be looking forward to next year? :D

Sadly, the odds of even half of those things coming together are so high that I can say right here and now if this stuff happens, I'll shave my head, paint smiley faces on my butt, hang from my ankles on a lightpole in the middle of uptown Charlotte and fart The National Anthem.

You may be right Rayzor but you have to think in JR's shoes for a minute, who does he want as opposed to what the fans want?

Again, Grimm makes the most sense as to who JR would look for

That sounds perrty fine

If we do bring in an offensive minded HC, I fully expect us to go after a legit, proven DC like Zimmer. I got my fingers crossed

This sounds great, but I am not so sure that I want any DC or OC from losing teams. I am ready for some guys that have won year in and year out calling plays for us.

i hope all those things happens....and that i am nowhere near charlotte when it does if that is going to be a consequence.

that is a dream scenario. the only thing i would add to it is bringing in curtis johnson from the saints to be the OC (in kind of a mccoy/denver OC role. i would love to see what he could do with our WRs.
