His best record was 8-5 last season, you call that elite? The Pac 10 was as weak as it ever has been last season. Stanford was rock bottom when he got there and could only improve. If you going by that we need to hire Tyrone Willingham, he had many better seasons at Stanford than Harbaugh did last season

Stanford is rated what now in the AP polls after beating USC, 14? That's pretty damned good company. I believe there are 4 Pac10 teams in the top 25 AP poll. You need to get over this Pac10 is weak nonsense. Go down the list of coaches out West. Pretty damned impressive.

Look at his 3 Head Coach hires so far:

Dom Capers, grizzled NFL coaching veteran from the Pittsburgh Steeler/Bill Cowher system.

George Seifert, another grizzled veteran from the Bill Walsh system.

John Fox, DC out of the NY Giants system.

All these Head Coach hires came out of systems Jerry Richardson aspires to be. Everything he has done as owner of the Panthers screams conservative, tested HC hire. The same goes on the field. While many beg for Mike Vick to QB the Panthers this will never happen as Richardson's view of who should play on the field outweighs his desire to win.

The next head Coach hire will be from the model Jerry Richardson sees as succesful in the NFL.

Yeah, Seifert was a low profile, cheap hire. Our next coach will be a coordinator off a successful team, not a current head coach at any level, and it sure won't be no Harbaugh. We have already wasted enough money on that loser

What I liked best about those videos were some of the comments he made that show he was thinking ahead about what the opposing offense might do situationally. That's the kind of "chess match" thinking I like in a coach.

I wouldn't mind Harbaugh, but I really would be surprised if he got the job. I think Zimmer could be good if he wants the job. I would much prefer him, honestly, to Frazier.

i never knew much about zimmer but i like what i'm reading here. gotta respect the guy. i have no idea how he'd do as a head coach (the fact that no one else has ever quite pulled the trigger despite all the buzz worries me a bit) but if he was brought in i'd be pretty excited.

So coaching at San Diego and having a winning record means something? At a school that gets all the athletes that can't get into UCLA and USC because of grades? And that Stanford resume is something to be proud of, one winning season so far and thats 8-5. He's a legend, a Lombardi already

any coach you hire no matter the resume, could not work out here, all of these coaches have positives & negatives. i think that's why it's best to have a sound philosophy as an organization & hire people to implement it. your coach may put his own spin to what you do, but if they don't work out your not stuck changing everything every 4 years( like the bills,redskins & raiders)

While Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer ripped his game plan for the Patriots because it was "paralysis by analysis," his players were going through a devastating self-analysis in the first days back to work after what Zimmer called a "fiasco" in last Sunday’s opener.

A little stronger wording than we're used to in Pantherland.

Zimmer already gave himself a standing eight count after Wednesday’s practice in taking the blame for allowing 17 points in the first 21 minutes of the season.

"The whole thing was my fault; the whole fiasco was my fault," Zimmer said. "I know better than what I did. I've got big enough shoulders to take it.

"The players are good guys. They do what they’re asked to do. They play hard. They always do. They played hard the other day. I had them (thinking about) too many things. Paralysis by analysis on a lot of things ... we forgot to play football. My fault."

But Zimmer also sent an urgent message to his players: "It’s on them this week. This is the last one I’m taking."

Interesting approach.

The Bengals won’t try to do it with the thick game plan Zimmer brought to New England.

"I tried to make these guys the ’85 Bears and we’re not at the point yet; my fault," Zimmer said. "There’s an old adage: You try to stop everything and you end up stopping nothing and we didn’t stop anything instead of remembering what we are and what we do and it’s all my fault."

If there are any English majors on here, I dare you to try and diagram that last sentence

Johnson says the concepts are still the same.

"Play hard. Play fast. Play reckless," he said. "We’ve got to play well, but we have to be reckless and fast to the ball. If you make mistakes, make them going full speed and getting to the ball with a nasty attitude."

Tank Johnson, quoting a bit of Zimmer's philosophy.

And the Ravens have the first team in NFL history with three players that have at least 500 catches.

"We’ll try not to give them 1,500," Zimmer said. "They’re feisty. They’re going to fight you. If we’re not ready for a fight, we’re probably not going to win."

Sounds like a guy who doesn't like to lose.

The more I read, the more I see Zimmer being in the mold of prior boss Bill Parcells, that being a drill sergeant type who can rip guys a new one in ways that would make R Lee Ermey proud, yet also be a teacher and inspire fierce loyalty. More than one writer has said Zimmer's players would go to war with him any day of the week, and this despite the fact that his late wife used to tell him he needed to be "nicer" to them (after which she'd make them cookies and brownies that it was Zimmer's responsibility to take to them)

I like this guy. Don't know if he's our next head coach, but he comes off as one of the better choices.

Alright, let's look at Mike Zimmer under the microscope. Loads of experience here and 10 years with his nose to the grindstone as a Defensive Coordinator in the NFL. Does Zimmer have the right stuff though that Richardson might pull the trigger on? Hmmm...

Served as DC for the Dallas Cowboys form 2000-2006. Taking a look at the league ranking for points allowed we see his defenses ranked 22, 20, 13, 2, 27, 12 and 20. Not exactly a great start.

Then, one year with the Falcons and his defense ranked 29th in points allowed.

Finally his current gig in Cincinnati starting in 2008 to the present. His defenses ranked 19th and 6th. Currently in 2010 the Bengal defense ranks 17th.

This is certainly a less than stellar resume serving under some very fine head coaches in Dave Campo, Bill Parcells, and Marvin Lewis.

When you look at the organizations Zimmer has served under it seems unlikely Zimmer would get a chance in Carolina especially when you look at the results on the field his defenses produced.

I hope so, tired of the same old thing... if we are gonna change direction, change complete direction, go from defensive to offensive.

The Panthers are in a division that features Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and an up-and-coming Josh Freeman.

Given that environment, do you...

A) Go with a defensive mind in the hope he can find ways to stop them

Go with an offensive coach with the idea that he can help us outscore them

If you prefer the first approach, then you'll want a guy like Frazier, Zimmer, or McDermott.

If the second option is more your thinking, then you're looking for a guy like Harbaugh, Heimerdinger or Garrett.

It's an interesting debate.
