Potential Head Coaches

what's this again? No, I don't think that's the case at all. Henning was a man guy, but we're definitely ZBS.

I know Davidson had originally switched to zone, but I thought I remembered us switching back in 2009. I know it looked like man the last time I was looking hard at it.

(actually, what it looked most like was crap, which honestly makes it harder to judge overall) :(

Could just be because it's looked odd overall since the beginning of this season, likely due to half the line being backups.

I'll look again this weekend. I don't really feel like dragging out the tapes of the recent disasters.

MIKE PETTINE

Pettine2.jpg...Pettine1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Defensive Coordinator, New York Jets

HISTORY: Jets DC (2009-present) Ravens OLB Coach (2005-2008) Ravens Assistant DL Coach (2004) Ravens Defensive Assistant (2002-2003)

DOB: 09/25/66 (44)

STRENGTHS: Jets defense has been number one or close to number one for the better part of his tenure as DC. Very smart. Players like him. Name is associated with some of the best defensive players in the NFL (names like Darrelle Revis, Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, etc). Cut his teeth under one of the dominant offensive minds coaching right now in Rex Ryan. Has been around football and football coaching pretty much since birth. His father was one of the most successful high school coaches in the football heavy state of Pennsylvania.

QUESTIONS: Is he really his own coach or just a pipeline for Rex Ryan? The least actual coaching experience of any of the candidates and, like Sean McDermott, has really only been in one system (under Ryan with both the Ravens and Jets).

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Coaches former Panther Kris Jenkins (when he’s healthy).

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Pretty much the same guys as Schottenheimer.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Unknown whether he wants to be a head coach just yet.

ODDS AND ENDS: Coached a high school football team that was the subject of an ESPN documentary (the only other guy on the list to coach at the high school level was Mike Heimerdinger). Played free safety at the university of Virginia. Probably the most intimidating looking coach aside from former players like Grimm and Rivera (not that it means anything). Used to get into such deep arguments over football with his Dad that Mom said to go argue somewhere else unless they wanted to do their own cooking and laundry.

ANALYSIS: When you think of a guy that coaches for Rex Ryan and who looks like Mike Pettine does, you'd automatically assume he's a hard-edged, tough as nails type. Perhaps he is in practice and on the sidelines, but when you hear him talk, he sounds more like the smartest kid in class than the football coach's son.

With that said, how seriously you take Pettine as a head coaching candidate comes down to a couple of questions.

First off, there’s quality vs quantity. His units have been some of the most dominant the league has seen in a long time, but he’s only been at it two years and his coaching experience before that is minimal, especially when you consider a line like this from his coaching bio:

“In 2002-03, Pettine used his computer expertise to help develop playbooks, scouting reports and video analysis for the defensive coaches. Through the years he has produced innovative coaching programs that utilize football video to develop playbooks and analyze game video.”

Doesn’t exactly sound like actual coaching, does it?

But it’s the second issue that’s the deeper one. That’s the question of how much of the Jets defensive strength can truly be attributed to him as opposed to head Coach Rex Ryan. For that matter, how much of it is the personnel? You'd hear some folks say they could look like a great DC too if they had the guys Pettine has playing for them.

Bottom line for me: While Pettine comes across as a very smart man when you hear him in interviews, he is still, for all intents and purposes, the defensive version of Mike McCoy. I don’t really think he’s ready to be a head coach, but he may get a gig regardless.

(pretty sure it won’t be with the Panthers though)

So were does this leaves Reteards Well Cowher May want 2 come back who i can see him coaching Denver Or Carolina. Only if Carolina just Really want a Big name coach. Which i serious Doubt.

Gruden- Well He will be in the Both Next Year and for a While. Due to he has a New contract with ESPN. And I dont know if you can break it or Not. If he can San Diego will be his first choice

I'm gonna assume that was a typo, but some of our anti-retread folk might just latch onto it

Can we please pick up Luck if he drops to us? (This is provided we don't come in dead last this year, which is looking more and more likely).

Harbaugh and Luck next year ftw!! Trade Pickles to a team that could use him properly and hopefully get a 2nd rounder for him at least. Win-win!

I don't get a say in the decision

It's a possible scenario, but a pretty wild one.

We use man and zone blocking all the time right now. On most kickout plays wide the blocking is zone while most plays between the tackle the assignments are man. Pass blocking is usually zone more than man when facing a 3-4 while with a 4-3 people usually have someone in front of them. Still guys have to rub off to pick up blitzes, stunts and similar line moves.

Distilled to the very basics it is matter of whether you are blocking a specific man or anyone who comes into your assigned area. Most guys including our linemen have to be able to do both.

I know Hurney (thanks mostly to Beathard) prefers "Hog" types on his O-Line. Definitely don't think we're quite there at this point. "Junior Hogs" maybe.

(no, not "piglets"; anyone who suggests that as a nickname should be beaten)

I Mean right Now Just Looking at the Scenarios I just cant Predict who will Carolina get just 2 the simple fact what if the Market for coaches just run out Quick and carolina just get a Random guy.How would that look? So thats what im saying And Like My scenario The biggest one now is the Vikings job, If Childress is fired then More then Likely Frazier might be the Next coach. Then Check this out What if the Vikings just wait 2 hire somebody John Fox will be on the Market and there is a good chance that he can get that Vikings Job.Then Next I can see Jason Garrett Been Dallas Next coach. and for the 49ers More then Likely Brian Schottinheimer. For Carolina I have to go with Leslie Frazier. But also I got A Heat Check Update i dont think Marty Hurney is safe in Carolina also..So we might need to start a GM thread..

No, your doing fine. Its just that I think in order for Clausen to have sucsess here we'll have to tailor the offence to fit his style and I don't know if any coach is willing to do this.:(

I think all it'd take would be a West Coast Offense guy. Not sure how Marty Hurney feels about the WCO though.

(my guess would be he's not a fan, but that's purely a guess)

He would be crazy to not consider WCO at this point. I agree it would be much better for Clausen, but more importantly.. much better for ANY young quarterback playing with young receivers.

I've said this before, but the odds of Harbaugh coming to Carolina are very slim. All signs point to him staying in San Francisco and coaching the 49rs. The prospect of staying in the Bay Area and taking over a team with their history in a bigger market is all around more appealing.

However, if somehow Harbaugh did end up in Carolina... it would likely spell the end of Clausen's tenure here before it even began. To put it mildly, Harbaugh hates Clausen's guts.

The People who Fit that Scheme Who We have In Mind Is Leslie Frazier and Mcdermott..And The Odds to get those guys arent as good At all..Like I said Before If leslie Frazier Gets the Job With The Vikings He will be off the list as well as Mcdermott due to the Fact he is not doing as good In Philly. But My scout game for him is Sunday I really want 2 see What He will do to the Colts the kind Of schemes and Blitz Packages He Will run. Also This Is Something 2 think about If And I really dont like Hypotheticals But Childress get fired. What Are the odds for Fox to take Over as the Vikings Coach. He fits there Profile and Scheme. But then there would be a scenario that The Only way Carolina will get Frazier is for that 2 happen.Because Frazier will have a Better shot to been in Carolina..Also More then likely if Frazier end Up in Carolina More then Likely Ron Rivera Might also..
