Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

good call here. one of the most interesting choices to me outside of harbaugh.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perry_Fewell

He got 3 wins out of the Bills....not bad.

He is from Gastonia.......bet that is not lost on JR.

"Not rigid." That would be refreshing.

He could be an interesting candidate.

Just one profile left from the original candidate list. I'll likely do that one early this week. After that, it's time to start looking at the secondary candidates.

Some will get the full profile, but others I may just put up kind of a summary page for. Don't necessarily want to just make the decision on who gets more type all by myself though. So I'll ask for a little input from the folks reading the thread.

Here are the names I'm considering right now:

Todd Bowles (Dolphins DB Coach)

Chuck Cecil (Titans DC)

Rick Dennison (Texans OC)

Perry Fewell (Giants DC)

Ray Horton (Steelers DB Coach)

Greg Manusky (49ers DC)

Mike McCoy (Broncos OC)

Bill O'Brien (Patriots QB Coach)

Rob Ryan (Browns DC)

Clarence Shelmon (Chargers OC)

Pat Shurmur (Rams OC)

Charlie Weis (Chiefs OC)

Of these names, who interests you the most? Or who doesn't?

If there's somebody you think is missing, you can say so, but I gotta tell ya I think the list as we have it is probably long enough. Unless someone else really distinguishes themselves or really starts getting a lot of buzz in league circles, it may not be worth it to expand further (though I'll allow for the possibility).

And again, I'm not including retreads here because it's generally expected the team won't go that route, and in truth they're fairly well known already so research is kind of redundant. I may do a summary list for them at some point, but for now I'm sticking to the rising stars.

So who from this list do you wanna hear about?

I wonder would the panther hire a guy thats only been a OC or DC for one year?

I got a question Mr. Scot:

I'm a big proponent of having someone who can assemble the right type of people (assistants) around him here and was wondering how often Coordinators rather than Head Coaches get first say about hiring linebacker coaches, lineman coaches, & etc.

Basically, if there is a proven coordinator who has also showed strong skills in assembling a staff, that would be easy pickings. In this respect, does anyone come to mind?

For my part, I'm considering Leslie Frazier off the market. I think one way or another he gets the Vikings job.

One of the domino effects from that change would be Brad Childress being on the market. If the Panthers were to hire a head coach like Winston Moss, Sean McDermott or someone else who wants to run a West Coast Offense, we could easily wind up with Childress as our OC.

If it were McDermott (something which seems more unlikely these days, but is still possible) you'd have to think Childress would be a leading candidate since they were colleagues in Philadelphia. That'd also likely lead to the Panthers taking a look at Donovan McNabb if Washington lets him go.

Head coaching philosophies vary. Some guys make all the decisions. Others like to hire their coordinators first and dialogue with them about position coaches. Of course, you can only hire people who are available because they're out of contract, out of a job or their current teams will let them go for a chance at advancement (varies).

If you want to look at a list of potential assistants assembled, click here.

Well, when considering that write-up and what I was trying to get at, I think Zimmer could have the most pull for bringing in a solid all around staff (do you agree in some respects?)...which moves him up my list. But I'm still with Mike Heimerdinger as my #1 choice.

This is my favorites list:

1- Mike Heimerdinger

2 - Keith Butler

3 - Mike Zimmer

4 - Russ Grimm

Mr. Scot, I would be interested to hear your intake on the 49ers' DC, Greg Manusky

I know the 49ers are having a down year but I don't necessarily believe it is because of their defense but more along the lines of their lack of QB play (which they may have found something in Troy Smith)

Thoughts?
