Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Have to say that while the Rams beat us, there wasn't anything that especially impressed me about Pat Shurmur today.

I'll grant that the receiving corps being pieced together with duct tape doesn't help things, but still, nothing jumped out at me.

Doesn't mean i won't profile him. Just making an observation...

Just one profile left from the original candidate list. I'll likely do that one early this week. After that, it's time to start looking at the secondary candidates.

Some will get the full profile, but others I may just put up kind of a summary page for. Don't necessarily want to just make the decision on who gets more type all by myself though. So I'll ask for a little input from the folks reading the thread.

Here are the names I'm considering right now:

Todd Bowles (Dolphins DB Coach)

Chuck Cecil (Titans DC)

Rick Dennison (Texans OC)

Perry Fewell (Giants DC)

Ray Horton (Steelers DB Coach)

Greg Manusky (49ers DC)

Mike McCoy (Broncos OC)

Bill O'Brien (Patriots QB Coach)

Rob Ryan (Browns DC)

Clarence Shelmon (Chargers OC)

Pat Shurmur (Rams OC)

Charlie Weis (Chiefs OC)

Of these names, who interests you the most? Or who doesn't?

If there's somebody you think is missing, you can say so, but I gotta tell ya I think the list as we have it is probably long enough. Unless someone else really distinguishes themselves or really starts getting a lot of buzz in league circles, it may not be worth it to expand further (though I'll allow for the possibility).

And again, I'm not including retreads here because it's generally expected the team won't go that route, and in truth they're fairly well known already so research is kind of redundant. I may do a summary list for them at some point, but for now I'm sticking to the rising stars.

So who from this list do you wanna hear about?

From the List Who interest Me Is, I have to go with Rob Ryan And Chuck Cecil.Starting with Cecil first Is because what interest me more, is this guy has the Titans Playing the Best Defense in the league right now I mean they are rite with the giants in the sacks Category But What makes it so good is that He has a Bunch of Nobodys on defense. Other then stephen Tulloch and Cortland Finnegan and Michael griffin I dont know anybody Else.Somebody might try there look with him the Only thing about him is that he hasnt been Coordinator for a long time. Also the reason why i pick him against Fewell is Just almost like in the leslie frazier type situation what would he do if he didnt have the guys thats on the giants defense well Buffalo kind of showed or they were just that Bad..

Next I have to go with Rob Ryan the reason why is because this year he browns defense has played Good against NFC South teams this year. And what you want somebody to play good defense against the NFC South teams because what you want to do is stop those teams. In a couple of weeks the browns Play the panthers and He might just be getting a Job Interview..

Also the More I think and try 2 figure out who has the best shot is i have to go with a Defensive Coordinator..Just because the panthers have always done. Im not 2 sure if they really want to go the Great Offensive Mind way just because of the fact it only worked with some Teams.Saints Cardinals..I believe if they cant find an Offensive guy with good Expiernce who has been in the league at least as a Coordinator they want go the offensive guy way.. Reason 1. The josh Mcdaniels State of Mind an Owner just Might think that the coach especially younger will rip the team into pieces.2. Is they only focus on one side of the Ball,Norv turner for example in drafts or free agency he never does any thing 2 make his defense better..And 3 What will best fit us Been able to out score the Saints or Falcons Or just having a great defense to shut them Down and it has to be Pittsburg or Ravens Consitent, you want 2 know every time you go out on the field is that your defense can win the game if they really can top 5 every year.. Now dont get me wrong I dont have anything against Offensive Coordinators but the only ones that fit the team is Grimm and Heimerdinger and they will be in the run against each other. But I promise you if Carolina Really Could they Will get Keith Butler, he is just going to have to have an Good offensive Coordinator to develop him into a Pro starter. Also No Big name coach will be the panthers coachnthe only one who probably would have had a chance is Mike Shanahan..

Also Mr. Scot could you give me a List of maybe a couple of coaches who have ties with marty Hurney who could become a potential head coach, or might have a shot.

Fewell was hired as defensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills in 2006 and served in the position through Week 10 of the 2009 season. After a disappointing start, the Bills fired head coach Dick Jauron and Fewell was appointed interim head coach, leading Buffalo to a 3-4 finish. Following the season finale, the Bills fired their entire coaching staff, including Fewell.

In what was statistically their best season under Fewell, the 2008 Bills defense ranked 2nd in the AFC in negative yardage plays, recorded 7 games of holding opposing offenses to less than 100 yards rushing, finished 4th in the NFL in red zone defense (41.8%), and allowed just 14 passing TDs all year.[2]

He got 3 wins out of the Bills....not bad.

He is from Gastonia.......bet that is not lost on JR.

Fewell said his system is not rigid and allows for variation. That can be witnessed in the way Fewell adapted to his personnel, utilizing Grant on the field as a third safety and finding ways to play more than two defensive ends at a time.

Fewell considers his conversations with the players as a “give and take.” He does not know what the split is between their input and his instruction, but acknowledges it’s more discussion than lecture.

“Sometimes I see things that they don’t see and sometimes they see things and we talk about what they did in previous weeks that we can change up, so there’s a lot of dialogue going on,” Fewell said.

"Not rigid." That would be refreshing.

He could be an interesting candidate.

Would like to bring back the name Pat Shurmur in the mix after watching this past sunday...

On top of the resume he has with the Eagles. He could be a guy to help our our QB situation..

Also, I still say that Charlie Weis is still on the short list of candidates because of what we have already. Bringing Weis in without changing the offense dramatically will make help players gel. I also believe that Davidson is not as bad as most make him out to be.

Defensively, Frazier still remains on top of my list but I wouldn't be inclined at looking at Mike Nolan. I know he didn't have a good stinch with the 49ers but I think he needs to be given another look.

only Weis has legitimate cred, IMO.

I've heard people suggest Mularkey, Van Gorder, and Carmichael but I write that off to them thinking about interdivisional hiring. I don't really care about that.

davidson has 0 chance at a HC spot here or anywhere next season.

Dude we will not need a coach next season, there will be no NFL. If Fox doesn't get offered a big deal by another team while the league isn't playing, he will be our coach again, or should I say still.

If I were making the decision by myself, it'd be Bowles and Horton as definites. Fewell, Manusky, Ryan and Weis as maybes. The rest? Probably not right now. Maybe down the road if there's more of a buzz about them.

But like I said, I don't just want to make the decision myself.
