Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

i don't know. the only one i want is harbaugh.

I don't see why anyone would want a PAC 10 coach who has not even won the PAC 10 conference, let alone came within the moon of a national championship, as the head coach of a NFL franchise. Like I said the other week, Tyrone Willingham has a better record as a Stanford head coach and has been a coach under some good head guys before that. So if you want Harbaugh, why not him as a candidate also?

Why are so many people eager to bring in college coaches?

Because being a College coach can produce gaudy numbers. Also, some people here like Harbaugh because he throws the ball a lot, ala Steve Spurrier.

Problem is though that College coaching is 50% recruiting, which is why most college coaches don't do well in the NFL, unless they spend some time as assistants first.

Harbaugh's done time in the NFL.

330 rushes, 232 pass attempts. 96 run first downs, 89 passing first downs.

And, clearly, you didn't see any of them last year with Gerhart. There's no part of Spurrier that fits Harbaugh.

Would you assume Harbaugh takes the exact same style from college to the pros or would you expect some adaptation? I'd think adaptation.

I listed him as a conventional offense guy because I don't believe he'd go WCO even if he did go pass heavy (obviously just being pass heavy doesn't equal WCO).

there's no way any college coach with any sense brings the exact same playbook.

As for approach, despite the mis-stated poster above, Harbaugh runs the ball, and he doesn't do it using spread or option, two ways college offenses and backs look better because they get the edge/running start outside formation. I don't think that approach would change.

I've only seen one Stanford game with Harbaugh coaching (vs Notre Dame) but from what I remember it was a fairly pro-style offense.

Granted, he hasn't been a pro head coach, but being a pro quarterback for fifteen years in the NFL is at least the close equivalent to being an OC.

I'm assuming 3-4 on defense largely because of Fangio, but I did a little research and found Stanford was 4-3 prior to Fangio arriving this year, so I'm not counting that as a lock.

It'd be no shock if he stayed with a 4-3 after coming here and looking at the personnel.

I find any coach who didn't, to be at a severe disadvantage. If it were me, I'd double Meeks' salary, try to lock down the others (minus Gilhamer, who is a dedicated Fox man), and hire a guy that's good with that.

And, I don't know that Fangio would come here. Truthfully, there are a lot of coaches on that staff that have parting memories here that are just not good.

Depends on how bad the memories are, I suppose. Zeros can heal bad feelings when they come at the end of checks.

I'm okay with keeping Meeks provided we beef up a little at defensive tackle. My guess (and it would be just a guess) is that he and his staff have a better chance of staying if we hire an offensive coach. A defensive coach is more likely to want to put his own thumbprint on things.
