Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Brian schottenheimer seems like a good fit based on how much they run the ball and I think Hurney still wants to be a running team..

That'd be another name that'd give people fits transitioning from "Fox".

He's a possibility, but I just don't see it. Not really sure I like the idea that much, really. I think he's overrated.

By the way, if anyone else can find video of Keith Butler, post a link and I'll add it to his profile. Searched a couple of different spots but I can't seem to find a clip of him anywhere.

As a side note, the Steelers website isn't so great. Shame for a team with so much tradition and so many fans.

true..I would like to give a long look at Jason garrett. The only thing I wonder about is his commitment to the run.

I've kinda soured on Garrett for a couple of reasons.

One, because I think Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense he runs are overrated. Two, and more important, because I read some stuff online a while back that indicated he wasn't doing such a good job of handling internal dissension.

Pretty sure it was related to all the crap with Terrell Owens, but I'd have to look it up because I don't remember all the specifics. It's one of the things I'm planning to check out when I write his profile.

(which probably won't be today)

Wow Mr. Scot you have some great Valid Points. About prospects for to come our next head coach but the only one i seen to get a good grasp 4 IS Really nobody but Zimmerman.HE is a good coach but his Defense is really not as good this year.

What Are the Odds of Chuck Cecil or Perry Fewell will get a shot at been the Panthers head coach. They are good defensive coaches and there defense is playing the best football dis year...?

Yeah..but I tend to think that a lot of problems are way overblown just because its the Dallas Cowboys.

I'm not tied to it being one guy. There are plenty of valid choices.

Fewell is a guy I might take a look at. Cecil? Maybe. Not that big on him right now but I could check further.

As far as where I think the team is headed, I'll reprint what I posted in the "Coaching 101" thread (link).

Here's where I'm at right now in my coaching research...

- If the team goes by its usual MO, it'll be Frazier or Zimmer.

- If they decide to go for offense, or if they decide it's time for a major shock to the system, it'll be Harbaugh.

- If they want to be tougher and/or bring in someone from the Steeler system, Grimm.

- If they put a premium on experience, it probably goes to Mike Heimerdinger.

- If they take it slow and other teams move fast, thinning the pool, could be Winston Moss.

- In house would be a shock (a big shock, honestly) but if that happens the job likely goes to Meeks. Brian Baker gets promoted to DC.

- If it's a complete "wow, nobody saw that coming" type wild card choice, could be Mike Pettine.

Guys that I just don't see getting the nod - for various reasons - McDermott, Rivera, Butler, Schottenheimer and Garrett.

Again though, that's right now. A lot could change by season's end.

BRIAN SCHOTTENHEIMER

Schottenheimer2.jpg...Schottenheimer1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Offensive Coordinator, New York Jets

HISTORY: Jets OC (2006-present) Chargers QB Coach (2002-2005) Redskins QB Coach (2001) Chiefs Coaching Assistant (1998) Rams Coaching Assistant (1997) two years as a college coach with Syracuse and USC in-between the Chiefs and Redskins jobs

DOB: 10/16/73 (37)

STRENGTHS: Innovative offensive thinker, using multiple sets. Had a hand in the development of both Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers. Currently working on Mark Sanchez. Dad Marty was a longtime coach with loads of experience and a solid regular season record, so he’s been around football pretty much all his life. Big believer in offensive balance.

QUESTIONS: Is he really ready or is he overhyped because of his last name? Jet offenses haven’t produced a 300 yard passer since 2006, even with Hall of Famer Brett favre under center. It’s valid that more recent issues could be attributed to Rex Ryan’s run-heavy philosophy or the youth of Mark Sanchez.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Jets roster currently includes former Panther Kris Jenkins.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: QB Coach Matt Cavanaugh has been an OC in the league before and could be again. DL Coach Mark Carrier might be a DC candidate. Would be nice if he could pry special teams coach Mike Westhoff away but I wouldn’t bet on it.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Like Butler, he’s already turned down opportunities to go elsewhere. Unlike Butler, one of those was a head coaching interview (Bills).

ODDS AND ENDS: Was backup to Florida QB Danny Weurffel under coach Steve Spurrier for the last two years of his college career. In 2004, had surgery for thyroid cancer.

ANALYSIS: This is another one where I wonder if he’s really available. Truthfully, I also wonder if he’s really all that good. He might be a little overrated due to his last name and his association with swaggering coach Rex Ryan. Granted, he’s made strides, but looking at the way his offense has performed and the facts that the Jets live and die on defense, I get the feeling his offensive attack as a head coach might be a tad too old school for Panther fans who are tired of John Fox. Of course, that doesn’t matter much if he’s effective and wins games, but his record makes me question whether or not he actually would. Bottom line for me: I think if his last name wasn’t Schottenheimer, he might not even be in the discussion.

Good points about Schottenheimer, Mr. Scot. Schotty has been my personal favorite for replacing Fox as HC and I think he'd be a good fit. Here are my thoughts and reasons:

Schottenheimer appears to work well at developing QBs, which is just what we need if Jimmy Clausen is to reach his potential. The makeup of the Panthers' offensive personnel appears to be similar to the Jets, with a young quarterback and a stable of young WRs. We have a good stable of running backs in Williams, Stewart, Goodson, and Sutton. The Jets have had one of the better rushing offenses during the last season and a half, and we have the offensive foundation to duplicate that success. Although, as you said, the issues on thier offense can be attributed at least in part to a young QB and a run-heavy philosophy, Schottenheimer doesn't strike me as a coach that will rigidly stick to a system, as opposed to scheming an offense around the offensive personnel (at least, I'd like to believe that). The Jets have had a solid OL for the past few season, with a few Pro-Bowlers, and there's no reason to think he wouldn't find a way to get similar production from our group of OL. The bigger issue is, is he ready to take the reins as a HC? Based on his interviews, the guy appears to be very knowledgeable about the game, is a young, innovative mind, and would certainly be a better media favorite than Fox (though that's not a necessary prerequisite).

The bigger question is, what style of defense would he bring if he were to be chosen as Fox's successor? Would our defense reflect the aggressive style of the Jets? Would he prefer a 3-4 or a 4-3, Tampa-2, style, or otherwise? Also, will he bring someone in that will significantly improve our ST (though they have played better this season)?
