Potential Head Coaches

Sean McDermott could be on his way out in Philly

Not long ago, Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermott was regarded as a rising star. But in the one-plus season since he assumed control of the Philly defense following the illness and ultimate passing of Jim Johnson, McDermott's star has faded.

The first hints came when coach Andy Reid became involved in the defense play-calling for the first time in his career.

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio, a former Eagles beat writer, recently told Mike Missanelli of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia that McDermott could soon be done.

"There is no question about that," Paolantonio said, via Jordan Raanan of 97.5 The Fanatic. "It may be time for; I don't know how much input Dick Jauron has in the defensive game plan, I'm sure he has quite a bit, but eventually they may have to make a switch there."

The defense fell apart in a 37-19 loss to the Titans, giving up 27 fourth-quarter points.

"It comes down to the defensive coordinator," Paolantonio said. "He has some kind of brainlock or whatever it is -- lack of judgment, inability to make adjustments on the fly. The head coach was covering for him this week [in a press conference], you heard that."

Yikes

I knew the defense had slid a little and there were some questions about him. From what I had read, still sounded like they were high on him overall though.

Sounds like it's worse than I had read. Wonder if something happened in the game this past Sunday.

I wasnt to sold on Sean McDerMott from the start...I said that he Need to be Coordinator for at least 3 season..But I have My new List Ready And i thought about it long And Hard...

First is My Offensive Potentials..

1. Jason Garrett- He has been good in big -D and a Great Play Caller..I believe its time for him 2 step out.

2.Brian Schottenhemier- He is good because of his development of Mark Sanchez, but some times i worry.. He has a good Offense but they dont put up huge numbers like i think they should. I think that its a good chance he could end up in denver.Because i think this is Mcdaniels last season if they keep going the way they are.

3.Russ Grimm- Even though the cardianls arent as good any more might be a reason he dont get a job.But its always a "If".But I dont do hypotheticals..

4. Jim Harbaugh- He has a good chance but the only problem is He is a college coach. And Jerry Richardson might not want 2 go that way..

Defensive Potentials

1.Leslie Frazier- He is number 1 hands down the vikings defense has been good dis year.even though they Arent getting any sacks they are playing good football..He Has been interviewing for 2 years, he is bound 2 get a shot.

2. Rob Ryan- The reason why I had to put him back on the list is Just because he played so great and he had his defense Ready against NFC South Teams this year. And He defense Killed the Saints in there Own Place. And They Played good against the Bucs and Falcons. His Job interview might be against the Panthers If his defense Plays good.He just might have a chance at been our coach.

3.Keith Butler- i know Carolina will give an Arm and 2 legs for Butler to be our coach. He is trainning under Lebeau. And He has Been 4 a while.Carolina always tried to model there organization after the steelers so he could be a shot.

4.CHuck Cecil- He had a good defense with a bunch of nobody plain the best football right now.. He is a hot coach so somebosy will try him.

5. perry Fewell- Like Cecil he is hot and has the giants leading the league with sacks. And a good defensive coordinator.

MIKE HEIMERDINGER

Heimerdinger2.jpg...Heimerdinger1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Offensive Coordinator, Tennessee Titans

HISTORY: Titans OC (2008-present) Broncos QB Coach, Assistant Head Coach (2006-2007, QB Coach title given in 2007) Jets OC (2005) Titans OC (2000-2004) Broncos WR Coach (1995-1999) fourteen years experience as a college OC or position coach, including a year at Duke and five years at Florida; four years experience coaching high school, two as a head coach (Johnsburgh High School in Illinois)

DOB: 10/13/52 (58)

STRENGTHS: The most experienced of all the candidates. Has been coaching in some form since 1975. Brilliant offensive mind; has a great track record working with quarterbacks; has helped to bring Vince Young back from the brink of being a bust; also helped restore Kerry Collins and was instrumental in the early development of Jay Cutler (as a Bronco). Also helped make Chris Johnson only the sixth rusher in league history to top 2000 yards. Has worked for some very highly regarded coaches in Jeff Fisher and Mike Shanahan.

QUESTIONS: The most experienced also translates to being the oldest, just two years from being 60. Has only been a head coach at the high school level, always a position coach or OC at the college or pro level.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Coached with Panthers LB guru Richard Smith for two years in Denver (1994-1995; Smith was the special teams coach and an assistant LB coach). Worked under John Fox college teammate and good friend Herman Edwards while with the Jets. Has been coaching former Panthers first ever draft pick Kerry Collins since 2008. Titans defense includes former Panthers Tony Brown, Jovan Haye, Dave Ball, Will Witherspoon and Tim Shaw.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Mike Munchak, current Titans OL coach and a possible candidate to be an OC. Dave McGinniss, Titans LB Coach and a solid DC in prior jobs.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Panthers might be looking for a younger head coach to go with their young team.

ODDS AND ENDS: Only coach in the bunch that has coached at all major levels (college, high school, pros). Was college roommates with Mike Shanahan. Considered for the Jets head coaching job after Herman Edwards departure but was passed over in favor of Eric Mangini. Titans staff on which he coaches has three different guys with the title of Assistant Head Coach: Dave McGinniss (LBs) Craig Johnson (RBs) and Steve Watterson (Strength and Conditioning). One of his assistants (Tim Hauck, assistant secondary coach) is the guy that effectively ended Michael Irvin’s career while playing safety for the Eagles. His alma mater (Eastern Illinois) also graduated Sean Payton, Brad Childress and, obviously, Mike Shanahan.

ANALYSIS: Heimerdinger would represent a departure from the Panthers usual practice of going with defensive coaches (though not as significant a departure as Jim Harbaugh). He’s a guy that’s been talked about as a head coaching candidate plenty of times, but it’s just never happened. You have to wonder what the reason might be. Still, he’s got arguably the best resume’ of the bunch. And yes, he’s older, but maybe an older guy is exactly what you need when most of your guys are still wet behind the ears. Add in that with his background, he could potentially put together one of the better coaching staffs. Add in that if you watch his video interview, he definitely doesn't sugar coat his comments.

UPDATE (11/24): It's been reported that Heimerdinger has been diagnosed with cancer and will be undergoing chemotherapy treatment. Although he'd recently been seen at the Titans facility, Jim Wyatt of The Tennesean reports that the OC duties are now being split between Quarterback Coach Dowell Loggains and O-Line Coach Mike Munchak. Speaking to the press, Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher referred to Heimerdinger as "very sick' and asked people to pray for his recovery.

Just as a meaningless add on, I have to admit it'd be kinda funny to watch all the consternation from beat writers, radio people and fans who'd have to make the transition from writing and saying "Coach Fox" to "Coach Heimerdinger"

(same deal applies if we hire Schottenheimer)

You know Heimerdinger would end up being Ima Dinger in somebody's username if he came here.

I'm sure there'd be a lot of variations (intentional and otherwise)

Was going to try to write about Keith Butler tonight, but too tired now. Maybe him and Schottenheimer tomorrow.

Growing list of guys I could potentially look at on page one.

I like cowher but im not so sure he will end up in carolina.. There is a Chance that it will be Dallas or Denver. If Gruden comes back i think he will end up in San diego and there is a chance in Carolina. Also i dont think Jason Garrett will get that job in Dallas after Phillips i think he might end up With the 49ers, And I think fox may in end up in Cleveland him or B-Shot.

I never liked Heimerdinger. I can't exactally tell you why but I never have. Reminds me of Henning in alot of ways. He seems to be more of a copcat OC and takes what other teams have done on offense and puts his own spin on it. A good OC no doubt but just not what I would call a offensive genius or an innavotiave offensive mind.

Even the spread option he does with Young is exactally how they used him at Texas. But that being said, is a good coach and fits alot of what the JR likes in a coach. He would not be my choice but who knows.

KEITH BUTLER

Butler2.jpg...Butler1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Linebackers Coach, Pittsburgh Steelers

HISTORY: Steelers LB Coach (2003-present) Browns LB Coach (1999-2002) nine years as a college coach, including one as a defensive coordinator

DOB: 05/16/56 (54)

STRENGTHS: Strong defensive mind. A product of the Steelers system that Panthers owner Jerry Richardson admires. Units he’s coached have been consistently good and one of the backbones of the strong Steeler defense. Helped develop players like James Harrison. Has spent the last several years working under one of the best defensive minds in league history (Dick LeBeau).

QUESTIONS: Would probably want to switch the defense to a 3-4, which would mean personnel changes and transition and, as such, may not necessarily be the best idea. Also, as with some others, would be leapfrogging the coordinator role. Coaching experience has been almost exclusively at one spot.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Played for the Seahawks while former Panthers team president Mike McCormack held the same role with that team. Coached several years at Memphis, the alma mater of Panthers runningback DeAngelo Williams (though long before Williams was there). Current Steeler roster includes former Panthers Justin Hartwig and Jason Chery as well as the brother of former Panther Ma’ake Kemoeatu, none of whom are directly coached by Butler.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: Ray Horton, Steelers current defensive backs coach and a coach considered to be on the rise. Might make a good DC, but there’s speculation Horton may get head coaching offers himself.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: He’s already turned down offers from two other teams to be promoted to their DC. Butler turned down the Dolphins as well as the Cardinals, coached by former colleague Ken Whisenhunt. Dick LeBeau has stated that he considers Butler to be his eventual successor.

ODDS AND ENDS: The Steelers job is his second stint working with Mike Tomlin. Tomlin coached defensive backs at Memphis in 1996 while Butler was coaching the defensive front seven and special teams.

ANALYSIS: Of all the profiles, this is the one that seems – in my opinion – to be the least likely to happen. Could he be a good head coach? Possible, though I’m generally a little skittish about having a guy who’s never been a coordinator on the pro level take over the whole show. Still. I think the discussion is moot because everything I’ve read indicates he wants to stay with the Steelers and take over for Dick LeBeau. Frankly, why wouldn't he? That's a premier job. The only thing that might change that is if he gets impatient, but there’s nothing really pointing to that happening. Outside of the Steelers, the Cardinals opportunity would have been ideal. If he’d turn that down, what is there to make you believe he’d want to move on somewhere else? The fact that it’s a head coaching spot? Maybe, but I have my doubts. I’m keeping him as a potential, but the realistic side of me tells me he’s not leaving Pittsburgh anytime soon.

BRIAN SCHOTTENHEIMER

Schottenheimer2.jpg...Schottenheimer1.jpg

CURRENT JOB: Offensive Coordinator, New York Jets

HISTORY: Jets OC (2006-present) Chargers QB Coach (2002-2005) Redskins QB Coach (2001) USC TE Coach (2000) Syracuse WR Coach (1999) Chiefs Coaching Assistant (1998) Rams Coaching Assistant (1997)

ained two years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, tutoring tight ends at Southern California in 2000 and wide receivers at Syracuse in 1999.

DOB: 10/16/73 (37)

STRENGTHS: Innovative offensive thinker, using multiple sets. Had a hand in the development of both Drew Brees and Phillip Rivers. Currently working on Mark Sanchez. Dad Marty was a longtime coach with loads of experience and a solid regular season record, so he’s been around football pretty much all his life. Big believer in offensive balance. Spent four years working under one of the better offensive minds in football right now (Cam Cameron) while with the Chargers.

QUESTIONS: Is he really ready or is he overhyped because of his last name? Jet offenses haven’t produced a 300 yard passer since 2006, even with Hall of Famer Brett favre under center. It’s valid that more recent issues could be attributed to Rex Ryan’s run-heavy philosophy or the youth of Mark Sanchez.

PANTHER CONNECTIONS: Jets roster currently includes former Panther Kris Jenkins. Previously coached Panthers receiver David Clowney.

WHO HE MIGHT BRING WITH HIM: QB Coach Matt Cavanaugh has been an OC in the league before and could be again, or it could be WR Coach Henry Ellard's turn. DL Coach Mark Carrier might be a DC candidate. Would be nice if he could pry special teams coach Mike Westhoff away but I wouldn’t bet on it.

WHY WE MIGHT NOT GET HIM: Like Butler, he’s already turned down opportunities to go elsewhere. Unlike Butler, one of those was a head coaching interview (Bills).

ODDS AND ENDS: Was backup to Florida QB Danny Weurffel under coach Steve Spurrier for the last two years of his college career. In 2004, had surgery for thyroid cancer.

ANALYSIS: This is another one where I wonder if he’s really available. Truthfully, I also wonder if he’s really all that good. He might be a little overrated due to his last name and his association with swaggering coach Rex Ryan. Granted, he’s made strides, but looking at the way his offense has performed and the facts that the Jets live and die on defense, I get the feeling his offensive attack as a head coach might be a tad too old school for Panther fans who are tired of John Fox. Of course, that doesn’t matter much if he’s effective and wins games, but his record makes me question whether or not he actually would. Bottom line for me: I think if his last name wasn’t Schottenheimer, he might not even be in the discussion.

    • Too late to edit above but the quote is from this Diane Russini article in the Athletic: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5941684/2024/11/23/russinis-what-im-hearing-the-day-the-jets-fell-apart-and-the-broncos-rallied-belichick-best-fits/ Okay.. there you have sorry I left that out the first post.  Also waivers keep the contract intact. That is the major difference in released and waived. It's all in that link from the other post.
    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
