Potential Head Coaches

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I can see keeping a past guy, when it's an establishhed coordinator. The hiring of a coordinator before a head coach is awful. Not that a Baker hire would happen first, but it shouldn't.

I figure most teams have an assistant head coach. Always felt like there should be one, but it shouldn't be a coordinator. Always thought the "associate head coach/assistant head coach/senior assistant" titles, a la Joe Gibbs era Redskins most recently, is silly. You need a guy to be your second in command, and not a team of lackeys. Same for the run game coordinator/passing game coordinator thing, which is coming on strong lately. Just not a fan - coordinator doesn't mean you have to do everything, but you're still in charge (consider the WCO hierarchy, where the head coach may call plays, QBs coach gameplans, the OC runs the O and administrates that side of the ball/runs the practice, and the line coach is in charge of the run game).

Twenty of the thirty-two have a guy with the official title. Others may have a guy who does the job (practically speaking) but doesn't have the nameplate.

Frazier and Mornhinweg are the only coordinators to also hold the title. Mornhinweg, Callahan and Marinelli have been HCs before (Vitt too, on an interim basis, if memory serves).

i think on the old board we had a really good discussion over what made better coaches, OC/DCs or position coaches and for some reason i'm remembering that positional coaches had a better rate of success or maybe i was just more impressed by them.

Well, one thing we now know about Mike Zimmer. He doesn't mince words.

His references to Bobby Petrino as a gutless bastard / coward / motherf----r certainly aren't in the same category as "it is what it is" :sosp:

Neither here nor there on his ability to coach, but tells you he's not one to sugarcoat.

well that might be a breath of fresh air but it's also not too far from a classic on camera meltdown ala denny green, jim mora, etc.

I'm not really a fan of that kind of thing, honestly.

But objectively, does it say anything about his ability to coach? Not really.

(and from what I've seen, he may well be right)

yeah, i'm sure he'd be a good coach. not a fan of that kind of thing either but i would turn a blind eye to that discussion about petrino.

i do wonder if that is going to hurt his stock as a future HC. considering it's been just over a year since his wife died and everyone's knowledge of what petrino did (not that the two are related by any means), i think most would make an allowance for that outburst.

Im thinking teams that are going to blow up their coaching staffs after the season. I think Fox will be heavily considered in San Diego.

The Chargers will be in line for a shakeup. We could hire Ron Rivera, and maybe Norv would be his OC (doubt it). Others that will blow up their coaching staffs (to consider):

Jacksonville (extension or not, del Rio is gone): our new DC?

Vikings (depending on the season's outcome, Favre and Moss could be gone): Leslie Fraizer

Bears: Lovie is gone if they don't win...just a hunch. I don't want any of them, maybe lovie for DC

49ers: I dont really want any of them...I guess Singletary would make a good fiery DC.

I have to agree Dpantherman Just think about it, Wade Phillips, Norv Turner, all of them could be gone and jon Gruden coming back also Cowher. The way i look at it Whats the chances of carolina going after Phillips or Norv Turner. I know that we made posts about Carolina just getting a younger coordinator. I really dont see gruden or cowher in carolina but i can see wade phillips or Turner. I mean im just saying if carolina is not sold on a coordinator especially some one they will need 2 rebuild a team, then i believe they will go after one of these guys.At least Phillips or turner the reason why is because they are the best chances to rebuild our team. And plus they have been coaching in the league.Unlike Gruden cowher...But just 2 confirm something I still have Leslie frazier and keith butler and russ grimm on my list. But just the chances with these guys could make it just much harder 2 choose...

No not really Wade Phillips cant even coach his own team in dallas there is 2 much tawk, and there is 2 many people who dont listen and 2 many stars..He would probably be a good coach for the panthers. And he knows how 2 rebuild a team...I would take Phillips before Turner anyday..
